I Just Joined A Band With Half Of Wire And Mike Watt

Postby bobzilla77 » 15 Feb 2017, 23:28

http://drillfestival.com/

I'm going to be in a band called FITTED on March 31 with Graham Lewis and Matthew Simms from Wire, and Pedro's own Mike Watt. Graham asked Watt if he would do this project as part of the DRILL LA festival which Wire is putting together here, and Watt asked me to join in.

It looks like our entire existence as a four piece is going to last about 10 hours, with a single rehearsal on the day of the gig. I suppose it's possible if it goes well we might do it again but I'm figuring it will be a one night kind of event. And we are planning to write some original material.

I've always loved playing with Watt in any circumstances over the last 25 years, but to join forces with dudes from Wire is not something I ever expected to do.

I'm looking forward to it to say the least. Wish me luck!

The festival does look interesting, based on reading about the acts. I'm not familiar with most of them besides Bob Mould.

I'm hoping to check out some good shit. No more ATP but they manaegd to curate their own festival anyway, not bad. I hear there will be a DRILL CHICAGO coming up too.

The fact that the LA show is the 40th anniversary of their first ever gig also adds some celebratory aspect to it. I've never seen them, quite looking forward to it. I haven't loved everything they've done but their top shelf material is on my top shelf.

Awesome, Bob, and well deserved! I know the names are alphabetical, but it's still a thrill to see you listed first in that group. :D

You will send Facebook invites, yes?

Any idea who the "special guest" is with Mould?

I assume the pinkflag guitar orchestra has a Wire connection as well?

I know, I love it! It's alphabetical by both first AND last name.

No I haven't heard anything more about who the other acts are the other nights. I did ask Graham, is Wire was playing every night, as was suggested in Consequence of Sound, and he says no, only the final night.

I am assuming that the pinkflag guitar orchestra is essentially a Pink Flag cover band, like when they toured with Ex Lion Tamers. I've seen pictures of like ten guitar players on stage together... maybe they will actually join forces with Wire to do Pink Flag songs? Which Wire famously never do anymore? Hey, it's the 40th anniversary of their first ever gig. Could be special.

I have no inside info on this however, haven't talked to those guys about it at all. So far it's been friendly email chains with musical ideas. Graham also gave us some DOME material to listen to, his post-Wire band with Bruce Gilbert, to suggest possible directions.

Just seen this - that's fantastic!

Let us know how it goes. Watt always comes across as a total sweetheart.

I believe I expressed my excitement over this on Facebook but I am happy to repeat myself here. Great shit, Bob!
