So I have an acoustic guitar now
and acquired "guitar playing for dummies". what a great book! I am now on about page 23, and have learnt 50 times more about the guitar than I knew before.
However it looks like it will be a while before I move on to page 24, as I practise E, D, A over and over and over again.

Are you still going?
Stick with it; when the calluses build up and your fingers get stronger it is much less of a struggle.
Can you do G and C yet?

Thanks for asking!
Yes I play it a couple of times a day. I can play c, e minor, g, a minor and am working on f. I can do a recognisable kumbaya and shake it off.

Re: So I have an acoustic guitar now
I thought that if you had an acoustic guitar it meant that you were a protest singer.

Thanks - that thread is a bit advanced for me at the moment. But I'll get there!
Shake it off is a protest song, no?

He he, thanks, but to be honest, the thing is (and the good thing) is that unlike something like a violin, you don't have to be technically amazing to be able to perform something listenable with a guitar and you can play for people pretty early on. I'm sure you already know that but in a couple of months you'll be able to play songs for people (and for you) and it's great.
I just wrote my second song and I still can't believe I've written songs, with music and everything.
It's magical.

Re: So I have an acoustic guitar now
A mate of mine came round a couple of weeks ago with two guitars for me to borrow - an Ovation electro-acoustic and some kind of electric guitar. He claimed playing steel strings on the acoustic would be easier than playing the nylon strings on my mum's old guitar - he wasn't wrong. The ovation is lovely. I haven't played the other guitar much.
But clearly making progress - the fingering is definitely easier now and I may soon move onto page 30 in my book.

Well now I am practising D7, C7 and G7.
This guitar thing is fun. As it happens both my wife and son like hearing me strum away.

A few minor 7s under my belt now, so about to move on to a few major 7s.
According to "guitar playing for dummies" after this I move off the basics and on to the next stage....

I went to see my mate Dave today. He has 75 guitars.
Anyway I bought an Ovation custom elite.

Re: So I have an acoustic guitar now
My personal fave is a generic min7 played with the thumb hooked over the neck, fretting the 6th string, then barring the 2nd 3rd and 4th strings at the same fret, with the index finger.
It leaves you other fingers to dance around Hendrix-style, doing hammers/pull offs.

I like playing around with D7 by changing the note on the E string. Just like regular D major, you can move that E-string note to the third fret, or do it open.

Leave that B string open too, and you get a great ringy, gothy chord. I love that one.
