The fact that they come from that Fatal Shore obviously lends a certain weight to the lyric

Same melody as "Van Diemen's Land" from Rattle and Hum

Their aesthetic seems totally different from folk-rock groups either from the UK or US. It's hard to identify exactly why.

If you want to confront the real power of advertising, you need to go beyond the "official" ads that a company constructs and broadcasts. There is another layer of advertising in which celebrities, let's say performers, use a particular product. They may or may not have been directly paid to do this, but do this they do, and there are very few people who escape its influence.

So much of the cache of the Stratocaster has to do with the fact that Hendrix used one. That he did is a form of advertising. I'd like to meet an electric guitarist who is immune to that fact, that is to say, who is able to ignore Stratocasters despite performers like Hendrix.

Do you want a Leica? If so, how much of this has to do with the intrinsic qualities of the camera, and how much to do with the fact that the brand's 35mm camera was the default choice of the great street photographers circa 1930-1960? Unless you can ignore the second fact, you're under the sway of advertising, albeit an indirect type.

Rayge wrote:No. Never have. Why on earth would I?

One reason is that Leicas are predominantly associated with rangefinder cameras as opposed to single-lens reflex. (Of course you could buy a rangefinder from another company, but let's put that matter aside for the moment.)

SLRs are much more popular with amateurs because you get to preview the image through the viewfinder. They operate on a "what you see is what you get" principle. However, rangefinders have lots of advantages, both in terms of the design as well as in terms of how they influence the type of photographs you might take. One photographer told me that rangefinders forced her to think in different ways, for example about the composition of the frame and that the photographs taken were different.

There are plenty of photographers who decided to use Leicas because Cartier-Bresson or Robert Frank or Robert Capa used them. They may or may not have done so consciously because of the rangefinder mechanism, but the rangefinder mechanism is what they got when they made this choice, and that choice affected the types of photographs they took.

You can go back through everything I wrote above and replace Leica with Fender Telecaster, Cartier-Bresson with Jimmy Bryant, etc. and come up with essentially the same argument.

Hank Marvin guessed that James Burton played a Telecaster--he guessed wrong--and got a Stratocaster instead. The result is the dominant sound of European instrumental rock in the 1960s.

A much more extreme example is one I posted in the obit on Thielmans. Since I don't think anyone quite got the connection in that thread, I'm supplying the details here.

Here's Toots endorsing Rickenbacker guitars.

Do you recognize the guitar behind Toots near his right elbow?

Here's another photo of the instrument.

Lennon decided to get the 325 because he saw Toots play it in George Shearing's quintet. I can't tell how much of this is a testament to the power of advertising, but I can say that the sound of rock and roll in the 1960s was radically affected by this. After Lennon, Harrison got a Rickenbacker, then Roger McGuinn (basically because of A Hard Day's Night), then Townshend. Because of one concert by Shearing, the sound of the British Invasion was Rickenbacker instead of, let's say, Fender. Our concept of the 1960s in this sense depends on a momentary decision made because of a company endorsement.
