I had honestly never heard of Mac Miller until I read the news yesterday that he had died, and was even more confounded by the fact that he's been quite well known for about ten years or so. Weird.

I'd only really heard of him in passing, myself. I think my little sister-in-law is a fan.

I assume these are like BMG/Columbia House joints...

I would assume that there are fewer of them in general circulation. Don't know why anyone but diehard completists would care.

Just happened across this old Muskrat post from an old thread about record clubs:

Muskrat wrote:When I was at the Capitol Record Club, we did most of our own pressings (through Capitol's plant), which in many cases were higher-quality vinyl than the originals; particularly those from labels like King and Sun (sometimes the cover stock was of a lesser quality, however).

And, I'm proud to say*, we for some reason issued the Ronettes' album in true stereo. Plus a lot of "club exclusive" packages; usually two discs, which included a bunch of stuff you couldn't find elsewhere. Out a&r guy was especially proud to have found and issued the Judy Garland London studio session, which he later put on a Capitol Garland box, which he produced freelance long after the Club was history.

* though I had nothing to do with it; it was before my time with the place

But has there ever really been such a thing as “natural” singing, at least since the invention of recording, microphones, and live amplification? Right at the primal roots of rock’n’roll, Elvis Presley’s voice came clad in slapback echo. The Beatles enthusiastically adopted artificial double-tracking, a process invented by Abbey Road engineer Ken Townsend that thickened vocals by placing a doubled recording slightly out of sync with the identical original. John Lennon also loved to alter the natural timbre of his voice by putting it through a variably rotating Leslie speaker and by slowing down the tape speed of his recorded singing.

The Hendrix family missed a trick this past Record Store Day: it would've been (approximately) the 51st Anniversary of "51st Anniversary", the b-side of "Purple Haze"...

When my clock radio alarm went off at 5:40 this morning (ugh) I was reminded just how far removed we BCBers are from the general music consuming population when the on-air-personality said, after playing a short clip of 'Black Magic Woman', "Here's a fun fact for all you out there...you all know this song, but what you might not know is that it wasn't originally written by Santana! I'll talk more about it after the break..."

One evening in November, puzzled pedestrians gathered outside Walt Disney Concert Hall, in downtown Los Angeles, to watch watermelons being dropped from a parapet onto the sidewalk. Every few minutes, a melon would detonate in a plastic-walled splatter zone. This was not a reboot of the “Late Show with David Letterman”; it was an exacting performance of Ken Friedman’s “Sonata for Melons and Gravity,” composed in 1966. The score reads, in its entirety: “Drop melons from a great height. Listen to the sound.” The Los Angeles Philharmonic presented the piece as part of a day devoted to the artistic anarchy of the Fluxus movement. Chad Smith, the orchestra’s chief operating officer and longtime artistic guru, exercised his duties to the fullest by operating one of the melons himself.

If you put ‘melon operator’ on your resumé in LA, everyone assumes you’re a plastic surgeon, not the CEO of an orchestra.

Also, Chad Smith? Isn’t he the drummer for the Red Hot Chili Peppers?

Just to show that chart figures don't tell everything:

The Beach Boys' first #1 album was Concert (1964).

Their fifth-highest-charting album was That's Why God Made The Radio (#3, 2012).

The Endless Summer comp was their only other #1. Surfin' U.S.A. and Summer Days (And Summer Nights!!) both got to #2. Out of fifteen US Top Ten albums, TWGMTR and 15 Big Ones (#8, 1976) are the only ones not recorded in the '60s.

Just learned today that Beethoven's 5th and 6th symphonies were composed concurrently, and both premiered on the same day - "in a long and under-rehearsed concert in the Theater an der Wien in Vienna on 22 December 1808." [Wiki].

It was his birthday today...

I find this 21 Savage situation very interesting in terms of celebrity and race and immigration policy.

The Root has an intriguing take on it here: https://thegrapevine.theroot.com/no-jok ... 1832354633

It all started when 21 Savage got wrapped in a Fulton County drug case in 2014, for which he served 12 months probation. That case is important because, Fulton County jail records show his birthplace as Atlanta, Georgia. Not an unfamiliar concept (even to birthright U.S. citizens who travel and reside in different states throughout their lives), the rapper claimed Atlanta, given the fact he spent his formative years in the southern city.

On Sunday, February 3, ICE arrested the rapper on charges related to overstaying his visa.

“U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement arrested unlawfully present United Kingdom national Abraham-Joseph ‘during a targeted operation with federal and local law enforcement partners early Sunday,’” said ICE Spokesperson Bryan Cox, per WSB-TV. Cox further confirmed the rapper is a convicted felon.

At a small local jazz gig last night I realised that the chap a couple of seats away was Muff Winwood, ex of the Spencer Davis Group and a former A&R man for Island Records. IHe must have a lot of interesting stories but I couldn't think of anything to ask him which wouldn't have sounded inane.
