In my eyes Paul has come closer to being as good as John its still nowhere near a contest.
Both wrote excellent songs in the Beatles and both have multiple excellent songs solo.
However, if you took a 10 best song list by both of them either with the Beatles or solo, John would have the better list and it wouldn't even be close.
As far as musicianship? Paul is a better musician but he never came anywhere near John in lyrics or song writing skills.

I gave my special issue of LIFE, "John Lennon Remembered", to a young Beatles fan. There are too many books about Lennon. It came out in 2005 and is still only worth a few bob.
