This groove I know cause Pete Rock sampled it. What I didn't know until I was looking at the notes for the LP is my dad's bass teacher (Major Holley) from back in the day played bass on it

Brian, that's a cool groove you posted there. I saw a Johnny Lytle album this weekend that I'm pretty sure Major Holley played on also. It might have even been this album. Now I need to go back and check it out.

If only she could sing! And if only a version with better sound was on Youtube! Either way, goddamn, it's pretty nice, at least where there aren't any vocals.

Here's one more in line with the rest of the thread, from the early '60s, and one I'm guessing few folks here know. It's the A.F.O. Executives, which consisted of Harold Battiste and all those studio cats who played on Sam Cooke's latter day sessions, Dr. John's Night Tripper album, and a whole bunch of other stuff. For the first few minutes, it swings along in a vein similar to "Sidewinder," but then at about 4:00, it shifts to a place where all the guys' New Orleans roots show forth a bit more, with a percussion heavy, call-and-response section.
