70s david bowie vs 70s rod stewart

Postby Bungo the Mungo » 14 Jan 2010, 16:09

i can't remember if we've done this before?

anyway, judge them on their 70s output, faces inclusive for stewart.

your favourite rather than most creative or influential etc (but feel free to comment on anyway).

Rod Stewart thrills me a hell of a lot more than Bowie ever could.

Rod Stewart. I just have more fun listening to his records than anything by Bowie. There was a time when I would have said Bowie, but I just can't get it up for him anymore.
Of course, I was mostly stoned at the time.

Well I'd vote for Bowie against 99% of artists of course, even so Rod Stewart doesn't provide much of a challenge here for me. He was a very good frontman delivering superior meat and potatoes fare, but he is very much a one-dimensional artist, and there's no great depth there. You wouldn't want to read a book about him.

Er, Bowie.

Sorry solar - I gotta go with Bowie too if we are looking at the entire decade. That said, if we were comparing only the first half of the 70s I might very well waver the other direction. But Bowie put out good records all the way to the end of the 70s. Stewart was greatly diminished by 1975 or so.

Rod wrote better songs, Bowie made better records

if I had to live without one or the other it would be Rod I'm afraid.

This is the Rebel Rebel look, which dates it to 1974. I was 13 at the time. Bowie was significantly more exciting to a 13 year old than Rod Stewart. I liked Rod back then, but he was the sort of thing your older brother listened to when he was trying to lose his virginity in the back seat of his Ford Capri. Rod was for "them." Bowie was for "us."

If you really wanted Rod to win, you should've made it 70-73. And even then it would've been close.

Rod was great for the first part of the 70s, no doubt- but the downward trajectory was rapid, and as a sucker for diversity there's obviously no contest there. Bowie by a longshot, despite the fact there's no denying the power of this:
