One I posted recently in another thread regarding Barclay James Harvest's song Hymn about the crucifixion of Christ. For many years I heard:
"For this we killed him and made him a pie"
and then a revelation when I finally saw a lyric sheet:
"For this we killed him, nailed him up high"

Just like I'd never gone, I
knew the song
A young girl with eyes like potatoes
It all seems like yesterday,
not far away
That's also got Chop the goolies / Wild and free
And, 'last night I slept with some dago'
Which I thought was a bit risqué at the time.

When the rainbow shares your dream you'll know.
Dreams, Fleetwood Mac.
Didn't know what she was really singing until recently.

Somebody else thought that was the lyrics too because the LP I had, which I got used, had that written onto the lyric sheet over the correct lyrics!

I think it's "gonna use my soft sell", which I think makes a good deal of sense. She's going to use everything, including subtle methods. But the lyrics that are on all the lyric sites say "gonna use my sidestep", which is strange. I have a friend who's in a cover band and recorded this song, and I guess they got it off one of the sites because that's what she sings, which is a bit sad.

A pal of mine recently told me he always thought it went
"I'd rather see you in bed with a girl than to see you with another man."
Yet another mondegreen that (imho) is better than the real lyric.

From David Thomas' The Book Of Hieroglyphs (p. 32):
I was bowled over the first time I heard the song by Tammy Wynette. "Stand by, Earthman," she sang. I couldn't believe it! Here, this country bimbo - as I perceived her then - had taken a standard tale of men and women in and out of love and transformed it across one simple chorus into a global indictment, a Fortean prophetic warning. My mind reeled. I thought, 'These country bumpkins have achieved postmodern while the rest of us are still wallowing in pre-industrial.'
In the way of these things, cover versions appeared. Subsequent iterations changed the chorus to 'Stand by your man.' I didn't understand and I was disappointed. I felt sorry for the woman - that her great accomplishment had been so deprecated.
Years later I discovered, in a very embarrassing incident, that the lyric had always been 'Stand by your man' and had never been 'Stand by, Earthman.'

I love secondhand albums that have been personalized by their former owner.
My copy of King Crimson's USA LP has somebody's weird liner notes written out on the paper sleeve along the lines of "Greeting, fans. Here's another one for you (etc. etc.)" as though it was a published piece. Eccentric spelling and grammar suggested a rather druggy author.
Kind of message in a bottle stuff.
