It's kinda depressing for a music forum to be proud of not knowing musicians.

It's Maybe I'm Amazed of course, but, Elton really was great in the 70's.

He wasn't as good as McCartney, tho'. Not really.
I've grown to like some EJ stuff, but I'm a little surprised no-one ever brings up his voice. It's faux-American in a bad way, and sometimes it's excruciating.

I mean their respective 70's work for the decade, not just the one song. They (the videos) are only examples.

Yes!
I voted McCartney.

Elton, by a mile, but then again, he'd win my vote for his 60's output, and that was restricted to a few cover albums.

That's insane.
And I like Elton fine.

Of the two tracks posted then Macca wins quite easily. Taking their 70s output though it's Elton by a country mile. When it comes to 70's output I don't think there are many artists at all that can challenge him.

That's what I'd say.
One of my first concerts was Wings at the Cow Palace.

Can we boil it all down to Goodbye Yellow Brick Road vs. Ram?
Re: 70's Elton John vs. 70's Paul McCartney
Anyway - McCartney was never the greatest lyricist, but he was never as bad as the mawkish, awkward Taupin. And he sang what he wrote.

Re: 70's Elton John vs. 70's Paul McCartney
okay then.
i'm taking elton.
the paul side of the scale has the beautific entries ram and band on the run, along with pieces, parts, and smatterings of all sorts of other crap, some of it excellent, some good, but as whole-album-hold-ups, disappointing. for me, paul after band on the run always ran half-great-half-eww on albums for a long while.
the elton side of the scale has the wondrous entries tumbleweed connection, madman across the water, and goodbye yellow brick road, along with substantial parts of elton john, honky chateau, don't shoot me, captain fantastic, and assorted other doodads here and there from whereverthefucque.
now, because paul at his very bestest best is basically better than anybody else at his/her best ten times over, this competition is closer than it may at first appear.
but elton still wins it.
kath
p.s. elton would not win it, however, if the race were to move past the 70s and finish... now.

Not really. Tumbleweed Connection vs. Band On The Run would be my head to head.
Re: 70's Elton John vs. 70's Paul McCartney
I like Elton's voice a lot (he was my first concert), but I'm far more INTO McCartney's voice.
These things matter.
It's close, but I'm going with Paul (much as Elton kicks his ass soundly in every scientific way, life's too short for stats).

I don't even like Elton (well, Bernie) that much, and I still had no hesitation voting for him.

Re: 70's Elton John vs. 70's Paul McCartney
Paul's highs were (slightly) higher but his lows way way way way WAY lower.
And Elton, as has been pointed out, was much more consistant.
Elton made 8 great albums in the 70s.
Macca made 2 - and maybe 3 acceptable ones.
I have love for them both
If I were to vote I think it would have to be for Elton
