Diva at the Manchester Festival
Anyone else going to see Rufus' opera 'Diva' at the Manchester Festival? I have tickets for the last show.
You know that Im not interested if you're going of course, it is just a thinly veiled way of bragging that I'm going

I think it's called "Prima Donna" rather than "Diva". My wife's going.

Rufus is a tit, man.
"U2 routinely spent a year in the studio...I have a theory: if you put four monkeys in the studio for a year with Lanois and Eno and Lillywhite, they would make a pretty good record, too."

I like most of Rufus's music just fine (some of it an awful lot), but I can't say the prospect of this is filling me with joyous anticipation.
It could be good I suppose, but it could also be the worst thing ever.

I watched the Imagine thing last night with the missus, and while I'm not a convert to Rufus Wainwright the artist, I was impressed by his evident love for opera and how long he has been working on the material for this project.

Radcliffe and Maconie had him on last night for an interview, and played some excerpts.

You want the second hour of the show.

Re: Diva at the Manchester Festival
A friend of mine is going next Friday (I think), I don't know what night of the run that is. I believe the tickets are reasonably priced, unlike the 'Rufus does Judy' (which should have been 'Rufus sings the songs because he can afford the money needed to stage this show, but has absolutely no other reason for doing so bar the kitsch camp angle') palavar at the Palladium, which cost her her first born child. Something like that anyway. She absolutely adores him. Personally; I quite like some of the music, he is undoubtedly talented, but he is also an insufferable wanker.
You and her would have been in the same school year Minnie. That's a bit spooky. Ish.

Re: Diva at the Manchester Festival
I'm just listening to the Stuart Maconie interview, which is interesting. They just played a bit, and it sounded OK, not that I know owt about opera
It did strike me as a bit odd though, that music critics are going to go along and review this thing on the basis of one night's performance, which seems to me to be a bit silly. Surely with something as complex as an opera it's going to take you multiple listens just to get your heard around it ? Hell, I sometimes have to listen to a three minute song just to work out if I like it or not.

I hope Rufus appreciates that you took a fair amount of time to cogitate upon it before pronouncing judgment.
