True, but I prefer 'Private Number' myself.

One thing I feel should be considered is that none of the entrants who chose it could've possibly been aware that anyone else was going to do the same.
I think it's a sterling song and shouldn't be punished just because it's not quantifiably better than everything else in the world. If you compare it to many other songs being chosen in the cup, it comes out favourably.

.
It was picked quite a few times last year and praised as well. It's very good but it is strange to say the least that out of the thousands of soul songs available this one keeps getting chosen.
Is it really so superior to everything else? No.

Fairness doesn't really enter into it with the cup. It is all about navigating multiple prejuduices.
When you pick a song that got a lot of love in last years competition, you run the risk that a bunch of other folks will have the same idea and make you look silly.
So it goes.
Anyhow - I slightly prefer "You Don't Miss Your Water" when it comes to William Bell songs.

Didn't he do a tribute record about Otis Redding? I really liked that one.
Re: William Bell - I Forgot to be Your Lover
I'd probably go for the more uptempo "I'll Be Home". I like the guitar on that.

Everyone cool knows that 'Crying All by Myself' is the greatest William Bell song

It's a fine record... a great soul track (I have it on a Stax compilation).
But the greatest record ever? Maybe not.
Anyway, how could someone forget to be my lover? He must've been smoking lots of weed.

You'd pay big bucks to know what you really think.
