The best movie score ever

Once Upon a Time in America. It's the most wonderful score I know. It's so very wonderful and so very beautiful. For many years I thought it an amazing film with a stunning soundtrack. I know think that it's an excellent film made almost perfect by an a near-perfect soundtrack.

Also a score that works on a kind of Proustian level in that whenever I hear it I am instantly immersed in the whole feel of the film (I can only desribe this as a warm glow suffused with an underlying sadness)

As a soundtrack, it wasn't so good. As music, I find it thoroughly enjoyable, but the movie was crap, and the soundtrack was completely buried and did nothing for the movie.

Sorcerer was a good choice because Friedkin actually made the movie to the soundtrack, rather than have them do it the other way around, which was just brilliant beyond words and decades ahead of its time. I wish many movies were made this way.

My personal favorites are several: Blade Runner, Koyaanisqatsi, Ghost in the Shell, Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence and Spirited Away -- Kenji Kawai is amazing. Spirited Away in particular, really manages to evoke the appropriate mood at various points in the film.

Danny Elfman is quite good, too (Edward Scissorhands at just a musical level, the first couple Batman movies for mood).

Agree with you on the TD-assessment. The soundtrack's one of my favourite albums but in the film it fell dead. Conversely, the two TD-tracks used in Risky Business did the trick really well- the love scene on the train was probably the best moment that married TD and film together.

I love the Glass-soundtracks (Koyaanisqatsi, Powaqqatsi) and Yo Yo Ma's score for Naqoyqatsi very much but Blade Runner scoops the lot for me.


As a conventional score, you can't beat the music of Morricone for the spaghetti-westerns of the 60s!
