Their least-known is their best

Postby Quaco » 30 Dec 2008, 19:31

Define it how you want. It's probably harder to have any consensus on what is an artist's least-known track anyway. But I want tracks you only heard about on a bootleg somewhere, that were played live but never recorded, were obscure B-sides or were the artist's biggest chart failure, etc. but are the best (or your favorite) by that artist.

Here's one...

Peter Gabriel
He had some great songs during his solo years. I don't think any of them move me quite as much as "Why Don't We", an unrecorded song only done live for a short time. I have it on a live show from Cleveland. Parts of the music were later turned into "Family Snapshot".

'Rain in the Country' by Floyd comes immediately to mind.

Of course, I was mostly stoned at the time.

Same artist
and a cover
but what a cover it was

I Heard It Through The Grapevine
live in Stockholm 1977, or was it 78, no, must be 77
hell of a version, got it on a bootleg recorded by a friend of mine at the same concert.
he made a minimalistic masterpiece of it, well over 12 minutes long

Probably my favourite McCartney rarity - 'When The Wind Is Blowing', from the Rupert film soundtrack he worked on through the Seventies. It's wistful and charming and is quintessentially Paul.

Not one of their most well known tracks, but "Fire On High" by ELO is, for me, their finest moment.

Take a chance & listen to it, from start to finish. You'll be pleasantly surprised.

Well, it was for Petulant C, but, yes, you're right. It's a magnificent track and absolutely not what you'd expect from ELO.

Sinatra is not known as a songwriter, but if the credit is correct, he should have spent more time on this rather than his singing. This song is better than any performance I've heard by him. Ella sounds better in some respects on this than on most of her other material as well and uncharacteristic as well. She sounds closer to Billie Holiday on this than I've heard her on any thing else, down to the tenor sax accompaniment. Wish Sinatra had written more songs for her.

Speaking of Billie Holiday, this is not that well-known a tune, but I prefer it to a lot of her hits. I'm not particularly a big fan of a lot of her work.

Well indeed. This track is quite good though, or at least the live version of it I saw in 1997 or maybe 98.
