TD Canon Pt 4 of 134- Tangram

Postby never/ever » 27 Dec 2008, 23:37

Image

The beginning of a new era in TD's history after the departure of Peter Baumann and the introduction of Johannes Schmoelling. This album's his baptism of fire and for one he brings in a more acoustic sensibility to the music. Noted for his piano-play thetre's also strands of acoustic guitars mixed up in the
As happens more often in the TD-discography, one side is persistently stronger than the other (note that in Ricochet as well)- side one is classic TD- great segues into excellent sequencer-rhythms, very melodic and approachable. The last part of this piece probably boasts the best sequencer-layered rhythm of TD ever.

Compared to that grand assault side 2 is a bit less impressive but focuses more on an ambient approach. Not always does that lead to a satisfying listen- for instance, when an interesting sequencer-riff is being brought up halfway through the piece it peters away after a minute or so, leaving the listener yearning for more. But the piece breathes promise on many accounts and still is engaging enough to impress.

Still one of the highlights in their oeuvre.

Never got into this one. This and Pergamon just seem to make little impact; so much so that I put off buying Logos (despite great reviews). Logos is of course excellent, it has more sense of the dynamic whereas Tangram seems a bit bland ... I really must give it another go.

Gave this a good listen on headphones last night and it is quite stunning. Act one is probably superior, but on the whole it flows beautifully.

Such a wonderful album

I played it today - in fact I played a few: Hyperborea, Tangram, Stratosfear, Phaedra and Logos

What an incredible band

Would it be so very wrong to tell you I’ve ever only owned two of these?

Slim would be mortified, I’m sure.

I'm sure he would!

It took him a couple of decades to get into them but he did eventually

Tangram, Stratosfear and Force Majeure are good ones to have Richard

My reply:

Other than the first four and Aqua, which you kindly coughed my way, this is my TD collection:

Phaedra.
Rubycon.
Force Majeure.
Stratosphere.
White Eagle.
Underwater Sunlight.

I’ll stream Tangram now.

Good albums to have

The one essential missing is Ricochet

I will stream it later. Meanwhile, I’m really enjoying Tangram...but what’s not to like about Tangerine Dream?

They ploughed their own synthesised furrow.
