A tribute album I may be interested in

Postby My name is Spaulding » 18 Dec 2008, 09:08

War Child - Heroes
War Child are proud to announce the release of their biggest and most ambitious album to date.

Heroes, released by EMI's Parlophone label features a unique and unprecedented collaboration between the biggest names in music history and today's hottest artists, working with a concept that mirrors one of the intrinsic aims of War Child's efforts in war zones across the world - to place faith in the next generation.

The concept of Heroes is that the biggest legends in music, including Sir Paul McCartney, Bob Dylan, David Bowie, Brian Wilson and The Clash, select one of the classic tracks from their own songwriting canon, and nominate an artist from the next generation to create a modern reworking of that classic song.

The full track listing will be announced in due course but already the album is shaping up to be a musical tour- de-force with the following amazing cover versions:

Duffy covering Sir Paul McCartney's Live And Let Die
Hot Chip covering Joy Division's Transmission
Beck covering Bob Dylan's Leopard-Skin Pill-Box Hat
Brain Wilson nominating Rufus Wainwright, who performs a medley of two tracks from Smile

These projects tend to end up being a bit hit and miss, but I like the idea this time, and most of the artists involved are good enough for me (Elbow have also confirmed their presence)

When I skim-read the first post I thought he was referring to the first War Child associated album.
which I enjoyed at the time. A bit hit and miss but its release coincided with a big change in my life so I have a lot of affection for it.

I never heard the Heroes album. Is it any good?
Bugger off.

I actually have it - it came out 10 years ago.

It's okay - the Lily Allen was the best track, as I recall.

Do I ever play it ? No.

Do I ever think I'd like to play it? No.

Did we ever find out what Beck covered Beck Bob Dylan's Leopard-Skin Pill-Box Hat with? Black felt? Mirrors, for a Noddy Holder approach?
Like fast-moving clouds casting shadows against a hillside, the melody-loop shuddered with a sense of the sublime, the awful unknowable majesty of the world.

I think he put a mattress cover on it and balanced it on a bottle of wine.
