Davey's prog lunch

Postby Davey the Fat Boy » 11 Dec 2008, 17:38

This happened to me yesterday. I'm only now emotionally stable enough to discuss it publicly:

Went into a local burger joint for lunch yesterday. This place has a nice stereo system and usually blares XM radio's "classic rock" station. Generally I don't mind it. I can put up with the chance of having to put up with "Radar Love" if I've also got an equal shot of hearing "Conquistador" or "Something in the Air".

This time I went in and was greeted by the keyboard solo to "Riders on the Storm". Nothing wrong with that, so I order my food and wait to be called. Next up, "Spirit in the Sky" - fair enough. They call my number. I get my burger. I open my mouth to take a bite....

Long distance...runaround....

Immediately my chest is under siege up with bile from my now-churning stomach.

Long time waiting to feel the sound...

Trauma long since stuffed away begins to resurface...old wounds re-open.

I still remember the dream there

I still remember the horror. I beg God for mercy.

I still remember the time you said goodbye

I look at my burger. Do I consider taking a bite? Will I hold it down?

Letting in the sunshine

Okay fine. I'm stronger than this. I can listen to this. Maybe go with it. Try and enjoy it. Let the sunshine in - Jon Anderson says I should in his best Mickey Mouse impression.

Did we really count to one hundred

Okay...just listen. The bass line is actually pretty good. The guitar playing is tasteful enough. If you ignore the godawful vocals and the past trauma, it isn't half bad. Didn't Alan White play the drums on "Instant Karma"? Doesn't get better than that. The verses are actually kinda funky in their unfunky kind of way. Roll with it. It is time to get beyond your hatred of all things prog.

Uh oh. Solo time. They are in full cape regalia jam band mode now. What were you thinking. This suuuucks. And now your burger is coming back at you again. What were you thinking dumbshit?

Just...hold...on. Song...almost...over. Just...hold...on....

Phew. Silence. Its over. You made it. It wasn't that bad really - if you ignore all the really bad parts its almost okay. Must remember to write something not entirely dismissive about it on BCB. Say a few nice words for Chris Squire at least - he's the best part of that band. Anyhow, it is over and you survived. You sir, are a survivor. Time to finish lunch. Next song coming...

deedle, deedle, deedle, deedle, deedle, deedle, deedle, deedle, deedle

Oh no....

Oh no....

Oh God no....please...just...no...

Welcome back my friends to the show that never ends....

Davey, your hatred of prog is causing you to dismiss a great song.
It's not too long and it's from a great album too.

It's actually got a melody you can hum as well.

Couldn't you just move to a table outside?

Funny you should ask that.

As I ran screaming out of the place, I couldn't wait to get out of the building.

Sure enough - the music was blaring out there too.

The horror...

Hmm. Maybe you should just eat in your car from now on. At least you can choose the music.

It has clearly come to that.

Next time, ask if they have a table in the non-prog section.

This sort of thing wouldn't happen if you'd stop wearing a seqined cape and red velvet codpiece to lunch.
You'd pay big bucks to know what you really think.

I can see his point, C. It would be like me having to listen to Nilsson, or Randy Newman...

...a gruesome prospect.

Alan White did indeed play on the most excellent "Instant Karma!" and of course the Imagine album. But he didn't join Yes till 1973, two years after "Long Distance Runaround". :) The drums on that song were by Bill Bruford.

Oh yeah, the drums surreptitiously tick away in 5/4 behind the 4/4 of the song.

SO your what a blues guy?
Give me your three best blues tunes and I'll glad strip them down like you just did.

Kinda?
It was a superior post, wasn’t it!
More of that sort of thing, Davey!

Haha the funny things I write on my lunch. Just reread Davey’s post and actually loved it. I love that song but never put it on.
