This was a tough one. I was about to go with the Moodies record, as it's my favorite of theirs and, I feel, their most coherent statement, but that Yes record is just too good!

Very tough indeed! Very strong claims for Yes and Tull, but I have to go with the Mahavishnu Orchestra.

I'll go for Jethro Tull's Stand Up.

Pay attention chav boy...Stand up is not an option.

This was is good, but it pales when stood next to almighty cacophony that is Birds of fire. Here is a record of pure power and invention, of inspiration and innovation. A record which most bands could never match for sheer power and brutallity. Good lord, it's so heavy it makes AC/CC sound like westlife.
You don't like me...do you?

Oooh, this is a difficult one. Four or five could be in, but I've decided on High Tide. Brilliant musicianship thoughout and one of the angriest albums I've ever heard. These guys didn't mess about with strumming.

Tough, very tough

It's between Mahavishnu and The Moodies- both would have definitely been in the canon under the old rules

I'm going for The Mahavishnu Orchestra.

A milestone

This is cruel. Having to choose between Peter Hammill, Tull and then having to go for Yes because that's one of my fave of theirs....cunts!

Going For The One. Perhaps not the best Yes album, but it has Awaken and that's enough.

The Rokster wrote:I think it’s a shame the canon is going to finish like this, because the original aim was to find the lesser known classics as I recall and now we're kind of ignoring them. I also think we’re caving in a bit to the prog-intolerant and that’s a bad thing: it has been fun reading their indignant Mr. Angry posts

four cracking candidates there (and the frigging latter day Yes nonsense isn't among them) but Rare Bird snatches it from Gentle Giant, Mahavishnu and the woefully underrated Broughtons.

Although Going For The One is a classic album in its own right, you could hardly say that Yes had taken their music forward (progressed) from Fragile or Close To The Edge.

It must be one of the albums I've listened to the most over nearly 30 years, but still I didn't vote for it. I find myself in a strange situation.

This is very true and if anything, Yes had taken a safe step backwards after the brilliantly out-there Relayer. Patrick Moraz had left and Rick Wakeman came back into the fold. The music was recognisably a nod to their past (something they’ve been doing ever since.) and yet Going For The One is a fucking good album which has the sublime Awaken…worth the admission price on its own.

GftO is not a patch on some of the earlier LPs including Relayer which is far superior

I have to be in the mood for the former- by that time they were over the hill
