RIP Rick.
For some reason, I'm unusually taken aback by his death; i'm sorry he's gone. And 65 is no age to die. He was definitely the most likeable of the Pink Floyd, and I suspect, for many fans of theirs back in their 60s' heyday, the last real link between the band and their real origins...
He could have created a very different Floyd with Syd back in '68, you know...

Re: Pink Floyd's Rick Wright RIP
Someone just sent me it on a text as they know I am a Rick Wright fan.
Fuck. How sad. My favourite member of one of my favourite bands - it's always been some kind of secret club having him as your favourite songwriter in Floyd. I never knew him, but I will miss him somehow - weird huh. He always brought something to Pink Floyd that I loved.
I'll spin some of his songs tonight - 'Remember a Day', 'See Saw' and 'Stay' are close to perfect for me.
RIP.
Its getting depressing as our idols all start to hit their mid 60s and are falling at an alarming rate.

By no means a PF fan, but still, something of a shocker. RIP.

This is too much, really. First David Foster Wallace, now Rick Wright.
What a rotten news.

Wow! He kept his illness very quiet. I'm genuinely saddened by this.

yep. i'm playing "stay" now... my favorite of his.
regarding our idols falling fast...
i remember once when i was a teen, i was trying to cheer up my ma when one of her favorite movie stars died. i told her, "well, at least yer not *that* old, ma." her response: "kathleen, wait until yer idols start to die on ya, in rapid succession. then you'll know how i feel."
have i ever mentioned that my ma was always right?
sigh.

It's true.
There are so, so many people in music whose work I admire or enjoy and most of them are now in late-middle age or beyond. A lot of them have lived a "rigorous" decades-peeling lifestyle too.
I'm no longer shocked by this kind of news although there's usually some kind of previous awareness of ill-health. David Gilmour gave an interview in the latest MOJO and was quite firm about Pink Floyd never touring again. He always comes off as matter-of-fact and didn't mention Rick's health, which is admirable. Most people in this world have trouble keeping their mouths shut when they know something that other people would get excited to hear.

This really is a shock - as previously mentioned his keyboards were a key component of the Floyd sound.

Re: Pink Floyd's Rick Wright RIP
I'm not the biggest Pink Floyd fan, so, in a sense, there's something slightly misplaced about me commenting on this thread. I do remember how unexpectedly, physically shaken I was when I found out about George Harrison's passing and perhaps Rick Wright holds a similar place in the hearts of PF fans as George did for those of the Fabs'.
In any case, Pink Floyd are central to rock music, its history, development, peaks and, less charitably, its subsequent downfall, and Rick Wright is central to the Floyd. It seems like the death of a major character in the cast of a story that has been of the greatest interest to me for all my adult life. It seems irrevocable and it is hammering in the fact that a generation of musicians I relate to deeply are slowly having their numbers depleted. The world seems a little more bleak for it.
RIP.

Well shocked, didnt even know he was ill. Truly the most underrated member of that band, seemed like a really nice guy too whenever you saw him interviewed. Love his work on Great Gig In The Sky, truly cinematic.
Bit ironic how the main feature in Uncut is about the Floyd's 30 best songs, you think they may have already known it was on the cards?

As someone said earlier, at least they did Live8.
Very sad, I'm one of the mid 70s Floyd fans and his work on those was fulcrum-like.

How very awful is that?
I bet the others are wishing they had made better use of the last few years.
That very sadly puts an end to all the 'will they, won't they?' speculation and rumours.

Re: Pink Floyd's Rick Wright RIP
Surely one of the most distinctive musicians in the history of the music, isn't he? Sad day. I'm glad I got to see him a couple of times in the 80s at least.
Zoomb, Quaco, Hatz, Pillowz & some more of us were working up a Syd tribute for October. It's really too bad that we have someone else to think about at the same time.
