Well if you can't stand repetition then Neil Young may not be for you, I think that's fair. The whole Germanic-composer thing of a composition constantly becoming, becoming, altering, building, evolving, ever becoming, is not what Neil is all about. His thing is more like a funk thing, being stuck in a spot, and seeing what you can do there.

Bowie was absolutely more Germanic - hell he even has a "Berlin" period.

Folks on this site talk about “I Feel Love” as if it’s the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel.

Wonder if they’ve noticed how repetitive it is, both melodically and lyrically?

The synth modulations underneath the vocal melody gradually change. That's the whole point - that's what gives it that incredible transcendence.

It’s a dance song that is supposed to induce a translike ecstasy so obviously it uses repetition with subtle modulations to do this.

Thank you. We're the weirdos. Not everyone else. I don't know why one of us has to remind us of this every so often.

And Helpless is a folk song with some gospel touches. It’s supposed to induce a feeling of fragility and transcendence. It uses repitition and subtle musical variations to do this.

It's Bowie. On BCB.

I agree there's a pretty general consensus here on those particular songs, but the overall battle is still pretty close. Even though it's Bowie. On BCB.

Don't agree in this particular case, but I respect the guy for standing his ground. Passions run high! It's not like he's arguing for the Eagles! (Though of course he has  .)

Yeah...it’s really killing me that a bunch of folks who think The Smiths make a better noise than Ray Charles don’t agree with me again. What will I do to get over the rejection?!!?

In all seriousness though...this was a pretty good discussion!

And fails utterly. The effect is soporific and I don't hear any variations that actually induce the transcendence you describe.

I don’t think your inability to discern should be held against the song.

No, but the millions argument is not relevant.
Probably it's not the right moment, but I'd bet a poll on NY songs here would place Helpless out of the top 20.
Nobody's ferpect.
