Seems like everybody and their little brother are reissueing just about everything they ever recorded.

Preferably as an 8 cd edition with a few low quality live shows thrown in for good measure.

Enough's enough. If it wasn't good enough to put it on record then why would it matter now?

Agreed Yves - these boxes are getting out of hand.

However, folks must be buying them otherwise the companies wouldn't keep producing them.

I am never interested in outtakes, alternative versions and demos and only live recordings that are of high sound quality.

The live recordings only are what sometimes interests me.

But, as I have said umpteen times - I wish they would release them separately.

Box sets are often far too expensive and really only appeal to the completist which I am certainly not!

It's all bollocks, and yet people will still buy them - more money than sense imo.

I can understand it if they are only collecting a few names. But if you are a generalist, it's madness.

Used to quite like the boxes but there are just so many released these days with different this and that and alternative this and that - stuff that never gets listened to, not by me anyway, so I’m not really tempted very much these days.

Worse still is the variations on vinyl being issued as if there is no tomorrow, I guess somebody must by them.

In a box set with extras including raw ingredients, a live recording of someone eating it, a glossy book containing photos of the entire menu and an alternative version of the meal remixed with added spice.

The latest Rush 40th anniversary release (Signals) is only available as a £200 box. There is no standalone release of just the album itself. Crazy!

Some boxsets are fantastic though. Floyd's Early Years one and the Tangerine Dream ones for example.

I like reissues. I've got great music by the likes of Palais Schaumburg, Malaria!, The Dancing Did, and Die Todliche Doris in the last few years which was unavailable otherwise. The Beatles type thing of reissuing and remastering stuff you already own thats not difficult to find, well that's alright too, just don't buy it.

I particularly like the reissues of original albums from the 1950s, with the original cover art intact, and whenever possible, the back cover art as well. I also love the thorough annotation, the liner notes, the rare photos, and other ephemera. The Japanese are good at that sort of thing. In the West, it's mostly comps!
