Me, kath and a couple more fans around these parts but few others methinks.
Just Zappa's sidekick or more?
Anybody else rate the master?
Favourite 'solo' albums?
How many do you own?
Something to whet your appetite:
The late, great Allan Zavod on keyboards - another of Zappa's lad

The Zappa stuff is obviously great.
The Enigmatic Ocean album with Allan is essential. I think he appeared on some other cuts too.
A dude

I sawZavod twice - once with Zappa and once with Jean_luc
The dude could play!
Yes, Allan appeared on other Ponty albums too:
Jean-Luc Ponty Live
A Taste for Passion
Cosmic Messenger
Imaginary Voyage
The latter being one of my faves
Stunningly beautiful with Daryl Stuermer, Tom Fowler (another Zappa lad), Mark Craney - tubs (Jethro Tull) and of course Zavod

Ha!
Of course. ‘The Volcano’!
However, I was referring to Holdsworth!
Stuermer had nice things to say about his playing too

I thought that after I posted!
I am sure you love Holdsworth's work on The Soft's Bundles - a first class album.
I have a few 'solo' Holdsworth albums - I love his trio work and this live one is a corker

Chad Wackerman {ex Zappa} on tubs
I saw his trio live once - amazingly at the Canning Town Bridge House - they were amazing
A relatively tiny venue - I recall the tubs weren't even mic'd up!

Re: Jean-Luc Ponty
Sadly, never had the pleasure.
I’ve got pretty much all his releases, and still pick up curios here and there.
Bundles was a treat I got this year, with the Etheridge live disc as a bonus. I think I was always put off SMZ by the prospect of Wyatt… but got the box with III onwards, which is great.

I've only got Enigmatic Ocean, and that's because Holdsworth is on it.

He is on two others - one possibly worth seeking out is Individual Choice from 1983:
Including:
Allan Holdsworth - guitar
Randy Jackson [American Idol judge] - bass
George Duke - mini Moog
J-L has discovered the synthesiser!!
Worth a listen

Yeah, I bought a few fusion albums because Alan played on them. But really, nothing is better than his '80s LPs.

Re: Jean-Luc Ponty
Yes the Zappa stuff and his solo album Enigmatic Ocean.
Surprised no mention of his work on Visions of the Emerald Beyond another jem.
He did a bunch of session stuff in the 70's and 80's but don't really consider it anything interesting.
I do like his album with Al and Stanley.

Also liked the tour with Jon Anderson doing Yes songs.

As for Holdsworth one of my favorite guitarists seen him several times including in early 80's (IOU band- Roy Buchanan opened). Got to talk to him at NEARfest. Favorite Holdsworth might be his Gong stuff but love Softs Bundles which I saw Etheridge(SM band) do a few years ago.

Lovely photos Steve
I prefer the Mahavishnu albums with Jerry Goodman - not so much for the violin playing but the strength of the material on those albums compared to Visions of the Emerald Beyond
No Billy Cobham either!
