Faust

Following on from yesterday's excellent Faust PSL:

The lad Jimboo, he seems to have disappeared, was a massive fan - like me

Discussion never seems to get far beyond The Tapes or IV though

Shall we discuss this great band?

A great band

This one from 1999

Sorry, gone awol, sort of.

Faust you say.

Ravvivando! As you know I dont care much for anything
called Faust without Zappi and Peron at the core.
It have Zappi though, but meh.

2009s C'est Com...Com...Compliqué is more like it.
Really good return after some years away from the scene.
Their 9th album wiki says.

Then we have Faust Is Last, again without Peron and Zappi.
This is Irmels version of the band.

Something Dirty, the 11th album by the group, really good.

j US t the 12th album by them, also good, rather minimalistic, but I like it.
The band released the album in a "foundational" state, hoping that
listeners would use the tracks to construct new music. Not sure anything
came from that idea.

Fresh Air the 13th album. Also good. Combination of live and studio
recordings during a 28-day tour of the US 2016.

Daumenbruch is album number 14. 2022. No Peron but we have Gunther Wüsthof
from the original line up. Not played it enough to form a opinion. Its more
like the first album.
"The basic tracks were recorded by Zappi W. Diermaier, Dirk Dresselhaus
and Elke Drapatz in Dirk's studio. They were sent online as rough mixes
to the individual musicians who recorded their overdubs independently,
not knowing what the other ones would do and sent them back.
This method created a result of interesting overlays, patterns and links.
The recordings were mixed by Dirk Dresselhaus and Zappi W. Diermaier
at the studio ZONE in Berlin. Three long pieces evolved, whose meditative
industrial character is based completely on instant composition, waiting
to be played live in front of an audience."

My ratings of the albums
The original line up and the return (two albums)
Faust, Faust So Far, The Faust Tapes, Faust IV *****
Rien, You Know FaUSt ****

The new era, its Faust but not like we know it.
C'est Com...Com...Compliqué, Something Dirty, j US t, Fresh Air ****

Then we have the unreleased 5th album and two albums of outtakes.
Punkt ****
Momentaufnahme I ***
Momentaufnahme II ***

"After the overwhelming success of last years 1971-74 box set release,
containing the first four studio albums and for the first time ever this lost
‘last’ album recording, ‘Punkt’ gets a deserved and necessary stand alone
release to the relief of fans and collectors and the undoubted future gratification
of those yet to experience the magic in these
recordings. 'While working on the “lost” album which the band
recorded in Munich, it became clear that I was listening to the
last ever made recordings of this band lineup. It had been their
attempt to release another album, which did not happen for several reasons.
After this Munich session every band member focused on other things.
So this was the end of Faust. No further recordings, no shows. Punkt.
Which means “full stop” in German and has “punk” in it as well.
An attitude which the band or at least some of the members certainly approved’

All good stuff Conny - which I agree with

Well almost - I really like Ravvivando! - but always better with Zappi and Peron

Correct about C'est Com...Com...Compliqué - one of my faves

I have all those you list accept Something Dirty

Think I’ve got a couple of their albums, can’t remember which ones though. Clearly they didn’t do a great deal for me.

Probably one of them is The Faust Tapes as it only cost 49p at the time, released on Virgin - the ubiquitous Faust album!

IV is probably the other one Rob

Give them another listen

Might do C. although I’ve got plenty of other music to listen to - might dig them out sometime in the future.

If the enjoyment is in the journey rather than the destination, a more pleasurable vehicle - such as those owned by Can, Neu! or Hawkwind - would make the entire exercise more enticing

It is obviously more for some of you than it is for me
I don't hate it - though the Tapes made me turn off after 5 minutes - but Faust IV (for that is the popular choice) is a bit kraut-by-numbers

Faust have a mischievous element to those listed above. They also keep the listener on their toes.

As I said - they are like a kid with ants in their pants - they jump around all over the place which I find exciting and enthralling.

Further, those above don't play cement mixers

Horses for courses.

I suppose

I bet I mentioned this the last time Faust were brought up on here. Awesome track. Love 'em, but I actually never ventured further than the original run of albums and this Dalek collaboration. Might be worth adding some albums to my Christmas list. Always thought they were more interesting than Can, who are the lesser of the big 3 in my view (which as usual, isn't a popular view).

Like fast-moving clouds casting shadows against a hillside, the melody-loop shuddered with a sense of the sublime, the awful unknowable majesty of the world.
