Allman Brothers Band

Postby GoogaMooga » 30 Oct 2023, 16:09

To me, the Allman Brothers Band are all about Duane Allman and Dickey Betts. Yes, there is Gregg Allman on lead vocals and keyboards, and the twin drums juggernaut of Butch Trucks and Jaimoe. But ask yourself, would you buy a solo album by Gregg Allman from 1977? Or is that going too far? As for the age-old question, who was better - Lynyrd Skynyrd or Allman Brothers Band - well, Skynyrd had the hits. ;)

Calm down Googs...!

The Dickey Betts solo albums and his band ones are all excellent.

Secondly, the Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks guitar line-up took some beating

Check out the superb live album: One Way Out recorded in 2003 it is absolutely superb - as good as Fillmore [well almost!]

As for Gregg's solo albums, I have two or three - including Playin' Up a Storm which you highlight. I like them.

He was better in the band - his superb voice suited the Allman's style.

I loved Lynyrd Skynyrd also but if push came to shove I'd go for The Allmans every time

Like both equally pretty much.

Yeah, I have sometimes considered Dickey Betts' own albums, but seeing as I haven't even got all the ABB albums, I have to prioritize. I have the two Atlantic fatboys of Duane Allman, though. :)

Allmans vs. Skynyrd

Allmans had the better players, Skynyrd had the songs.

Can't decide. One thing I will say though is that the Allmans were touched by God for a time, so there's that.

Just don't buy "Two the hard way", the album he made with wife, Cher . What was he thinking? (Probably, "where's my dealer?")

Who'd want to reissue it? Maybe some warped minds at Rhino - once, but hardly now. Speaking of Cher, she's got a Christmas album out now. It had to happen.

That album's all right, but there is something of the watered-down-Allmans vibe to a few of those tunes.
Likewise, Greg's Laid Back LP is merely okay.

Surely you jest?
Midnight Rider, Dreams, Whipping Post, In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed, Melissa……I could go on and that’s without mentioning their bona fide hit. LS got more radio play no doubt. They were a top tier bar band.

Sorry Les, I'm missing your point here

Please clarify

He's saying that the Allman Bros had plenty of great songs, and that Skynyrd were merely a bar band, albeit a top tier one.

Skynyrd had two songs, and one of those was awful. Dreadful band. If you want a really good bar band, try the Hold Steady.

In my book The Marshall Tucker Band was much better than Skynard. They could rock or play the blues as good as them yet had the country thing and a little jazzy feel when required via the flute/sax. I’d even take Wet Willie over Skynard.
