Does Van der Graaf count? (One could argue it's a different band...)

That counts - but it was temporary
As for T. Rex - yes of course, but I didn't want to hog a long list and I thought I'd leave the easy ones for the likes of you Chas

M+M - are you sure...? I didn't know that
Album cover evidence please?

I guess this doesn't count, really:
In 1983, lead vocalist Martha Johnson and guitarist Mark Gane pared the band down to a duo and briefly changed the name to M+M.

Good call.
I loved OMD and saw them live 3 or 4 times but lost interest after Dazzle Ships, which is brilliant, so I missed the abbreviated nomenclature journey
Thanks

You may not want to accept initials nevertheless; Bachman Turner Overdrive - B.T.O on some of their later albums.

The Easy Cure became The Cure, but that's straying in to Silver Beatles territory.

I think it does, at least for this 1986 album which is credited exclusively to M + M (previous albums were released as "Martha & the Muffina / M+M" or "M+M o/k/a Martha & the Muffins"). They reverted to their original name in 1992.
