Not the same Rob.

Ellington, by implication, suggests there is bad music.

Frank didn't think so and I agree

There is music I don't like eg The Crooners - Sinatra, Martin et alia but I don't consider it 'bad' music - it just isn't to my taste.

.

Kind of conjures up the same thing to me - music I like (so good music) and music I don’t like (bad music) - it is all subjective after all.

Sorry Rob - they are not the ‘same thing’

Would anybody in their right mind say that Frank Sinatra’s music was ‘bad’ or that he couldn’t sing

Of course not

I suggest, my friend, that you are being somewhat obtuse

Yes, somewhat obtuse

.

That’s rich coming from someone who regularly dismisses music his Lordship likes as ‘derivative claptrap’. Pot calling the kettle black it seems to me.

Not at all my learned friend

'Derivative claptrap' does not define bad.

The stuff Bob posts is good music but not too my taste because often, to me, it sounds like stuff I heard 50 years ago - so I prefer the real thing.

A 'current' band that sound like Genesis may be excellent - I am sure they are but why bother?

PROG magazine are full of these bands - all of which I have respect for because they produce good music but I would rather turn the page and read about the real thing.

However, I'd rather listen to Bob's stuff (if I had to) than the likes of Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin.

All 'good' music though

Sorry, my illogical friend, but your argument lacks validity. ;)

From the Oxford dictionary:

"absurd or nonsensical talk or ideas"

Clearly not "rubbish"

Eg "Some folk around these parts talk claptrap with their nonsensical talk and ideas"

If the cap fits.....

I'm not really a fan of Calvert either but I do like Hawklords album a lot and prefer it to the other Calvert-era albums. I actually think Levitation is better than any of the Calvert albums but that turned out to be a last hurrah for the band.

Ray - I'm shocked lad.

I expect that of the cloth-eared old goat The Slider - but you....?

Quark, Strangeness and Charm for example is as good as most

This track is as good as anything Hawkwind ever wrote - penned by Calvert/Brock

As I always say, it's shame they don't release some of the live albums separately

Yes, a shame

I like the albums, just not as much as the previous ones or Levitation. Quark and 25 Years On are both very good albums. Astounding Sounds and PXR5 I find to be weak.

About Ellington's aphorism: It is true that it is all subjective, we each have our sweet spots and our pet hates, so it's hard to measure. One objective way to compare would be the physical reaction to music. Personally, I think techno is almost uniformly bad music. It works if you are young and e'd up in Ibiza, but taking a sober view of it, well, it ain't Satie. But even then it is hard to define bad. My suggestion is the most objective way we can hope for.

That's a very good appraisal Ray - spot on regarding the ranking.

In particular Astounding Sounds and PXR5. I wouldn't say they were weak but definitely lees strong.

PXR5 is the weakest (!) of the two probably because Astounding Sounds contains the brilliant Reefer Madness and Steppenwolf

oooof!

Lastly, Levitation is very strong - positively aided by Peter's tubs

I think it helps, makes it more legible. 90s, though, perhaps not. CD's yes, 90s leave it out.

Googa, you don't use an apostrophe in English unless the word is possessive or a contraction. "CDs" is neither, it's merely plural.

Okay, I'll drop it in both cases. I am a stickler for proper spelling. :geek: It must be acceptable in informal English, though, I see it everywhere, even more than I do without the apostrophe.

As Frank Zappa would say, "The crux of the matter..." ;)

I'm jealous - I couldn't justify the financial outlay!

But then again I probably wouldn't play the extra stuff more than once...

...except the Sunderland concert which folk seem to be raving about

Thought: if it's that good why didn't they release that material on the original version way beck when...?

PS Have you any Turner 'solo' albums? They are magnificent- robust and full of music
