Hawkwind

I don't know much about Hawkwind, not even sure if they would be filed under prog, but they sound prog to me. Even this prog-hater will make a few exceptions, and Hawkwind is one of them, judging by the songs on Anthology vol. 1, released on the unbeknownst-to-me French label, Samurai. I landed on vol. 1 and 2 yesterday, and I hope to find vol. 3 as well. Apparently they are scarce CD's; amazon uk doesn't have them, and I for one had never come across them before. They are not my first, though, I have a few of the key albums as well, but may only have played them once, because I buy a lot of stuff. Anyway, two tracks in, and I like what I am hearing. The songs don't progress in fits and starts like so much inferior prog, but roll along nicely, with a good groove throughout.

I am seen them live umpteen times from a week before the release of their fine debut album until a few years ago when I saw them with BCB Theo.

As for Anthologies - I don't do them - I have no 'best ofs' or compilations in my collection accept Tamla Motown Chartbusters Volume 3 which I treasure - they do not flow

You need the proper albums - three come to mind that reflect the progression/changes in the band.

Quark, Strangeness and Charm

There are others - but these three for a start

You are right about anthologies, C, they do not flow the way the proper albums are thoughtfully sequenced. That's the drawback... On the plus side, you often get exclusives - single mixes, B-sides, rarities, live cuts, so they have got a place in my collection. Also, it can be a very costly endeavor if you must have substantial runs of every artist that you happen to like. I wouldn't go so far as saying I *hate* prog, for I own a good smattering of the genre, certainly more than I do heavy metal. The only genre I hate almost entirely, is techno, Goa trance, or whatever. But even there we have got Underworld.

Anyway, I am on vol. 2 of Hawkwind now, they are a trip.

I'd start with In Search of Space, paying special attention to Terry Ollis's beautiful drumming then head to Doremi Fasol Latido, the next album but with a new rhythm section that included Lemmy for the first time, and glory in the runaway juggernautness of it all. As I've said before, it sounds like they're navigating a black home in a transit van. After that, you've got Hall of the Mountain Grill - a more varied and refined album.

Those Hawkwind anthologies were from an antique shop, where I had to pay 20 DKK for each (appx. £2). I also bought some Black Sabbath and some reggae. So, not nonsense.

There is music I don't like eg The Crooners - Sinatra, Martin et alia but I don't consider it 'bad' music - it just isn't to my taste
