Hawkwind
I don't know much about Hawkwind, not even sure if they would be filed under prog, but they sound prog to me. Even this prog-hater will make a few exceptions, and Hawkwind is one of them, judging by the songs on Anthology vol. 1, released on the unbeknownst-to-me French label, Samurai. I landed on vol. 1 and 2 yesterday, and I hope to find vol. 3 as well. Apparently they are scarce CD's; amazon uk doesn't have them, and I for one had never come across them before. They are not my first, though, I have a few of the key albums as well, but may only have played them once, because I buy a lot of stuff. Anyway, two tracks in, and I like what I am hearing. The songs don't progress in fits and starts like so much inferior prog, but roll along nicely, with a good groove throughout.

"Pink Floyd on acid" was how the Melody Maker described them on the release of their first album.
I am seen them live umpteen times from a week before the release of their fine debut album until a few years ago when I saw them with BCB Theo.
One of the greatest bands that ever walked the planet!
As for Anthologies - I don't do them - I have no 'best ofs' or compilations in my collection accept Tamla Motown Chartbusters Volume 3 which I treasure - they do not flow
You need the proper albums - three come to mind that reflect the progression/changes in the band.
X in Search of Space
Warrior on the Edge of Time
Quark, Strangeness and Charm
There are others - but these three for a start
(The latest remixed) Space Ritual is one of the greatest albums ever made
As for the 'prog-hater' statement you surprise me Googs. I would expect that from you-know-who but you dear friend....??

Re: Hawkwind
You are right about anthologies, C, they do not flow the way the proper albums are thoughtfully sequenced. That's the drawback... On the plus side, you often get exclusives - single mixes, B-sides, rarities, live cuts, so they have got a place in my collection. Also, it can be a very costly endeavor if you must have substantial runs of every artist that you happen to like. I wouldn't go so far as saying I *hate* prog, for I own a good smattering of the genre, certainly more than I do heavy metal. The only genre I hate almost entirely, is techno, Goa trance, or whatever. But even there we have got Underworld.
Anyway, I am on vol. 2 of Hawkwind now, they are a trip.

Buy the proper run of albums by an artist or band you enjoy and forget about all the tons/tonnes of nonsense you buy at the charity/thrift shops!!
It's cheaper lad!
Yes, cheaper!!

Re: Hawkwind
I'd start with In Search of Space, paying special attention to Terry Ollis's beautiful drumming then head to Doremi Fasol Latido, the next album but with a new rhythm section that included Lemmy for the first time, and glory in the runaway juggernautness of it all. As I've said before, it sounds like they're navigating a black home in a transit van. After that, you've got Hall of the Mountain Grill - a more varied and refined album.
They're not prog. They're Hawkwind. A national treasure.

It takes all sorts.

Those Hawkwind anthologies were from an antique shop, where I had to pay 20 DKK for each (appx. £2). I also bought some Black Sabbath and some reggae. So, not nonsense.

Big fan here too. At least from '70 - '80. I can hang with any of their LPs from that era.

Agreed the first 10 studio albums up to 1980 are essential.
Then the Hawklords take over
Levitation the last of the great run, has Peter Baker aka Ginger on tubs - he really drives things on
Eg
GO GINGER, GO!
Huw Lloyd-Langton on tasty guitar

Apparently Duke Ellington coined much of this aphorism in 1962: “There are two kinds of music good music and the other kind’.

Not the same Rob.
Ellington, by implication, suggests there is bad music.
Frank didn't think so and I agree
There is music I don't like eg The Crooners - Sinatra, Martin et alia but I don't consider it 'bad' music - it just isn't to my taste

Kind of conjures up the same thing to me - music I like (so good music) and music I don’t like (bad music) - it is all subjective after all.

Re: Hawkwind
Ellington was part of the same group of musicians and vocalists (eg Buddy Rich, Sinatra) who were the musical mafia and they defined "bad" music" as youg kids playing rock n roll. Elvis and their ilk were a threat to their livelihoods and these "real" musicians were vindictive as well as being musical snobs.

Sorry Rob - they are not the ‘same thing’
Would anybody in their right mind say that Frank Sinatra’s music was ‘bad’ or that he couldn’t sing
Of course not
I suggest, my friend, that you are being somewhat obtuse
Yes, somewhat obtuse

Well said Chris lad
Well said
Calling any piece of music 'bad' is indeed crass, elitist hogwash
[with the exception of Brian Eno which is obviously justified]
