The show at Sunderland’s Locarno on 23 December was also recorded, but not used." Interviewed around the release of Parallel Universe, Nigel Reeve - EMI (and now Warners) Hawkwind archivist - said of the Sunderland Space Ritual tape, "there's a fault on the recording and whatever you do in the mixing you're just not going to be able to retrieve it."

modern technology is wonderful as they sound crystal clear now. I've not heard any Nik solo albums, theres a couple on youtube i'll check out though.

I can't believe we got this far into a Hawkwind discussion without mentioning the 'hit'. Lemmy was not the usual lead singer at the time of "Silver Machine" but he ended up doing the lead vocal as Calvert apparently had some trouble with it. C probably knows the whole story.

I actually, through an odd set of circumstances that I don't quite remember, inherited that single soon after it came out. Always loved it.

I've also found I liked the supposedly 'new wavy' Hawklord albums more than the 'classic' ones, but that's probably just me.

Your mileage may vary, of course, and I'm no expert, but it seems like they're a band that deserves box set treatment and, as far as I can tell, has never gotten it.

I was actually at The Greasy Truckers gig, Chalk Farm Roundhouse, where the track was recorded (Man and Brinsley Schwarz were also on the bill)

The lyrics were written by Robert Calvert and he sang the lead vocal on the original live recording. However, the vocals were considered too weak for the single release so they were re-recorded in the studio. Calvert, who suffered from bi-polar disorder, had been sectioned at the time so was unavailable to attempt another version, and the lead vocals were eventually recorded by Lemmy:

"[Calvert's] vocal was fucking hopeless, but he never realised it. That's how mad he was. It sounded like Captain Kirk reading 'Blowing in the Wind'. They tried everybody singing it except me. Then, as a last shot, Douglas said, 'Try Lemmy'. And I did it in one take or two". - Lemmy

Lemmy just had the best voice for it. Of course, Bob was not pleased when he found out. – Douglas Smith
