The Longevity of the PSL [Inaugural: Friday March 5th, 2010]

Postby C » 28 Oct 2023, 10:49

.
Yesterday was probably the second postponement in the long history of the Prog Synch Listen. It wasn't an original idea but arouse out of the Synch Listen which was in place before, but the prog goons wanted a Listen which was more in line with the prog genre.

Of course as Reap Corner progressed album selection became more 'Broad Church' by encompassing other proper music such as The Incredible String Band.

We have even done some 'new music' like Porcupine Tree, Big Big Train and latter-day Marillion also.

The challenge I have is that I can not recollect when the inaugural PSL was. I know the album was Atomic Rooster's Death Walks Behind You but I cannot for the life of me place the year

So, question 1

Any ideas what year the PSL started please...?

Participants in the PSLs vary.

There has, over it's history, been a selection of cohorts.

I definitely remember the Slider attending a few before he now says 'I'd rather put a red hot needle in my eye' or 'the music is too robust for him'. However, I am sure he is there in spirit.

One particularly cohort, included for probably a couple of years was Belle Lettre and Pigpen - particularly when Hawkwind or Grateful Dead were on the agenda.

I understand that with the time difference attendance is difficult - although the likes of Matt Wilson, Les Six String, Maarts Never/Ever, Chas O, Ray Trans Chigley, toomanyhatz etc have done reasonable runs.

I recall, with great fondness the Tangerine Dream marathon of FIVE TD albums back to back, when Edgar died, with Maarts and kath et alia

My dear old friend Michael ('I invented krautrock') Yomptepi had a good run and lightweights like Mike Jung come and go but can be there to rely on when the chips are down. Yomp was around for years before he disappeared off the face of the [BCB] earth - a good lad though and sadly missed.

Then you get the 'specialists' - Pete DD who attends all the Led Zeppelin listens and likewise Griff/Alf and the Yes and Wishbone Ash albums.

We have the real Illuminati mainstays kath, John Spock and Chris LMG who have 90% plus attendance. In fact the only member I can pin-point their first [regular - I can't remember what came before] PSL is Chris who joined at the time of the lockdown - in fact Tuesday's PSLs started as 'Lockdown Listens' in 2020. A loyal member and friend.

Reap loved his PSLs....!

Lastly, we have the group that puzzles me - the ardent music fans who have never ever attended a PSL (although one or two, when invited, say the might but don't). No hard feelings - I accept you right(!) but I do find it hard to understand - as has been said many times you can post as much or as little as you want - Mike and one or two others often just pop in to say 'hello' which is appreciated. Even 'nice tubs!' will do. Attendance can be problematic particularly when the mother-in-law is around for dinner or you're off to the pub or a gig!

So, question 2,

When was your first PSL.....?

Thanks

PSL on!

I can recall neither precisely.

I can find a PSL of Jethro Tull's Stand Up to which I contributed in 2010. I did look in every now and again during that time. In fact, I recall that in 2013 I had female companion who was considerably younger than I. As young folks tend to do, she would often check in on me when we were not together, texting me to describe what I was doing.

When I told her I was engaged in a Prog Synch Listen, she refused to believe me. When I later showed her the recorded written evidence of the thread, she thereafter referred to the PSL as 'That saddo music thing you do with the internet randomers'.

The young can be unwittingly cruel at times. At the time I was attempting to mould her developing musical engagement in the direction of prog, even possible engagement with a future PSL. Sadly, she refused the many charms of King Crimson despite massive evidence on my part to help her recognise their seminal and essential place in each music fan's life.

As for a PSL, even in my lovestruck condition I soon came to appreciate that despite the remit of the forgivingly "broad church" policy which pertains, a selection of the most apt Spice Girls album for us all to enjoy was likely to be bogged down in the early voting stages of selection.

*sigh*

One lives and one learns.

As for the first PSL, I have no idea. Obviously some time in between 2003 and 2010, but which year I cannot say.

Were it within the realms of technological possibility I would say 1974.

An excellent amusing response Chris - thanks!

Could the PSL have come across from the embers of Mojo....?

kath has been around the PSL for a very long time - she'll throw some light on it - certainly years before 2010

I think it was very soon after this 'Synch Listen' post (2007)

viewtopic.php?f=1&t=65379

As Bungo the Mungo states - "This is going to be another of these where sixteen people express interest and it ends up being one man and his dog, isn't it?"

Suffice to say it didn't take place!

This was generally the case - there was no structure, no organisation, no commitment - ad hoc and no discipline

The Prog Goons soon put that straight

I reckon the PSL started in 2007

Any views?

kath? The Slider?

LMG and The Baron, posted and appear to be two of the few still around - any views?

I have no idea on either question. I enjoy them when it’s music I like and I’m available. Unfortunately I am pretty busy since retirement with my so called music career. I got invited last Wednesday to play drums in a jazz quartet and they are keen on having me back so I’m about to get busier. The jazz sync listens are most welcome.

Even so, I'm pretty much of the opinion these days that 1971-72 was the peak of popular (and sometimes quite unpopular) music.

PROG SYNCH LISTENS
PostThu Apr 22, 2010 9:34 am

The Prog Illuminati have recently convened an extraordinary meeting regarding future plans for the Friday night Synchronised Prog Listen.

It was agreed that these plans would run for five years after which there would be a full meeting of all Prog Corner members to discuss plans post 2015.

The Prog Illuminati have decided that the featured band would be selected by the vanguard of the Illuminati and shared accordingly. This is non-negotiable.

Prior to the feauture of the said band a poll of three of their key albums will be posted for PC members (and others if they wish to particpate), again these three albums are non-negotiable, allowing BCBers to vote for the album that they would like to engage with.

Further details will follow after tomorrow's choice of Wishbone Ash's Argus which will be the last under present rules.

See you tomorrow at 21:00
If I jerk- the handle jerk- the handle you'll thrill me and thrill me
