Thanks Matt - but even the cheapest, with delivery to Blighty, at £36.25 [$44] including p&p is outside my price range
Nevermind
However, it is not essential for me - it's a bit too late period - 1989
I'm not keen on Brent Mydland's keyboard contributions and I don't think his backing vocals fit well.
Bring back Keith & Donna....!
[and Pigpen of course!]

What tremendous album
What is it that us Deadheads love?
When I am in the mood, I become totally immersed
Exceptional stuff and full of music

I can only speak for myself, but I love the whole Dead image/ethos. The hippie, counter-cultural aspect. The time ('60s), place (San Francisco), jammy, aspect of the music. The fact that there's so many live shows which have been posthumously released, and how they changed their set list so often. I mean - have you ever heard a box set of a band's set of shows for a tour, or even a few nights in a row? It's the same set list most of the time. Same songs, same sequential order, etc. Not the Dead...
I don't listen to the band's albums and tell myself they're as good as the Beatles, Stones, or whatever your ne plus ultra idea of a great band is, but I still enjoy most all of their studio LPs, and do consider some of them to be classic. I easily have five times (or more) live Dead discs than any other band, though Crimson might come close.

Nice post Matt - very comprehensive and I suppose that's exactly how I feel - it's like being a member of a club!
Incidentally, I think I only have 3 or 4 studio albums
The two obvious ones plus one or two more
I have tons/tonnes of live stuff but I prefer them live to studio
However, any studio recommendations....?

I've got these and a few others, all are OK, the top two are more than OK. I'm not much of a fan but I'm happy to listen to them now and again. Blues For Allah is the one I've played the most.

I have three of those - I don't think I have Anthem of the Sun
I think Blues For Allah is my favourite of those three
I must play Wake of the Flood again. I was underwhelmed last time I played it...
This ranking from worst to best is interesting.
No suprises regarding the top 2.

Amazingly I have got 10 of those listed, didn't know I had so many. Bought many of them very cheaply at boot fairs and the like.

I enjoy all of the above, and don't forget Aoxomoxoa, Terrapin Station, In the Dark, Garcia, and Ace (the last two are solo albums by Jerry and Bob). The debut LP is more garage-sounding, but quite interesting.

I love those two albums.
Incidentally I have 4 or 5 of the GarciaLive series, by the Jerry Garcia Band - I selected them carefully and have always been pleased with what I have
Trouble is, I can't remember which is which - they are denoted by a volume number and the covers are of a very similar format
I seem to remember this is a corker:

Nice choice
I have the first two: New Riders Of The Purple Sage and Powerglide
Although Jerry is an 'additional' musician, on the second, and only contributes a drop of banjo

Re: The great Grateful Dead studios albums.....? [other than the obvious two]
Seems I have 61 Dead titles, but then 36 of those are Dicks Picks, 13 are the studio albums as in the link above and 5 are live albums from initial run - Live Dead, Bears Choice, Skull and Roses, Europe 72 (plus later vol 2), so there remains a ton of stuff out there where I've barely scratched the surface.
As for favourite, whilst I love WD and AB, it sort of annoys me when evryone always mentions those since they aren't quintessential Dead, sort of Dead for non dead fans (how many have those two and nothing else?). I'll probably take Anthem of The Sun and Mars Hotel. Would have been Blues For Allah based on side 1, my favourite side, but side 2 is a bit too noodly for my tastes

A very valid point and well made Paul
They are always up there with the 'best' studios albums though - aren't they?
That was my peripheral point
