My favorite is the one with the skeleton overlooking San Francisco Bay. I don't think I've got any of the Dick's Picks volumes, but I've got One From the Vault and Two From the Vault, which precede the Picks.

It was the first album to be released after Jerry Garcia's death, and one of the first releases in a continuing rush of live albums from the band's vault. It contains about two thirds of the April 26 concert at the Jahrhunderthalle in Frankfurt, West Germany, during the Dead's Spring 1972 tour of Europe (a tour originally represented by the Europe '72 album, released in 1972; though that release contained no tracks from the Frankfurt date). Disc one includes a number of songs from the first set, followed by the last part of the second set. Disc two includes the first part of the second set.

Hundred Year Hall was certified Gold by the RIAA on January 8, 1997.

The concert in its entirety was later released as part of Europe '72: The Complete Recordings [73 CDs] (with the previously released tracks receiving a slightly different mix).

Got a few of their albums but they don’t get much play, think I’ve got the odd live one as well but can’t remember when I last played it. The Dead don’t do much for me.

Apart from Cornell it's mainly the complete Dicks Picks. Those in the regular release cycle of course - Live Dead, skull and Roses, Bears Choice, Europe 72 (plus vol 2). only a few others Fallout FRom The Phil Zone ,Fillmore West 69 and One, Two nd Three From The Vault. Really like DP26 from 1969.

I agree.

I love Live Dead, but it really is a front-loaded game of two halves. What was LP 1 is superb, as good as The Dead ever gets. After that the fall off is rather sharp, enjoyable as the remainder is.

Thinking about my top three as requested, I was surprise to find that all of mine were officially released during the Dead's life as a functioning band, as opposed to the dozens upon dozens of archive releases often of full concerts.

Each of my three selections has a later expanded/related release or several, but I still stick with my choices of albums released during the band's lifetime. Not out of any particular attachment to them - I became a fan after 1995, but just because I play and enjoy these nearly always more than any retrospective release:



Europe '72

Many will be aware that everything recorded on this tour has been released, both in a massive 73-CD boxed set now costing as much as as a small automobile, and as single shows and related releases from the 1972 tour.

I nearly went for Steppin' Out With The Grateful Dead England '72, which over four CDs (equivalent to an eight LP set) makes the case convincingly that the Dead in that year and on that tour were wandering into magical realms while untouchable on stage.

But that official Europe '72 2 CD set originally released as 3 LPs has something about it. I never tire of it, I played it while on a camping holiday this past weekend, and a cassette dub of the second CD was a constant companion in the car to camping excursions nearly 20 years ago when I was first really discovering the Dead.



Reckoning

This anthology of acoustic recordings made in October 1980 mainly at shows in opposite ends of the US: the Warfield Theatre in San Francisco and Radio City Music Hall NYC. The Rhino re-release adds a bonus CD which doubles the length of a package already bulging with delights.

The album combined Dead takes on traditional fare and acoustic ballads from their own past - 'It Must Have Been The Roses', 'To Lay Me Down', etc. Plus more sprightly stuff like 'Cassidy' and 'Bird Song'.

Lovely.



Without A Net

I bought this one really cheap in a sale at Virgin Megastore (remember those) not long after it came out, and enjoyed it enough without further exploring the band. These days I really love those Spring 1990 shows seasoned with 1989 recordings, here featuring Branford Marsalis on one extended workout.

Like the '72 tour, there have been more reissues of 1990 material, including multi-disc runs of entire shows and the single venue release from 1996 Dozin At The Knick.

Another anthology put together for these from the less committed or less well off, Spring 1990 So Glad You Made It makes a companion of sorts to Without A Net, and was assembled with a view to avoid overmuch duplication.



Bubbling under these three are Filmore East 2-11-69, Truckin Up To Buffalo, and Nightfall Of Diamonds. I was surprised at how much post-1978 material I regularly enjoy, and how little Pigpen appears on my favourite live recordings.

I will have to think about that.

Yeah, that's a great one! That and the Road Trips Volume 2 Number 2 are the two best 1968 shows which are circulating. There really haven't been that many pre-1969 shows which have been officially released.
