I love Paul Chambers' bass playing
I love a drop of double bass me.
My son Zap got to decent standard and then gave it up

Upright bass is a lifetime of dedication. I love the sound. I played with someone last Thursday night who played one.

Hello all.
I am here and have been.
Rushed in - it takes me longer to set up the lap top to talk than the Spotify to play the album.
To absent friends.

Where do they hide all the musicians?

From the Van Gelder Studio - a lovely recording, especially for 1961
Great clarity, brightness and separation

This album has a fantastic sound.
The lead melodies are very strong and reveal Oliver Nelson's later skill in film and tv music.

There's a bit of soprano sax in there - the great Eric Dolphy - such a distinct sound

Hoedown is an interesting choice but Dolphy’s playing and Nelson’s arrangement makes it happen. Freddie can always be counted on for a brisk solo as well.

Great to be here! And to have you join us!
Good grief - the line up on this album!
Every one a veteran or eventual veteran of the best and most influential recordings in jazz.
Including, of course, this one,

Thanks - me too,
As I said, I can set up Spotify quickly, on my telly and stereo.
It is getting my laptop stoked up and on BCB that takes the time.

Thinking back to Hoedown - does anyone think of the ELP version when that plays?
I know I do...
