Are there songs where you only like part of it?

Postby pcqgod » 30 Mar 2021, 02:59

I don't mean like if you hate a song but you might like, for example, a bass line, or one lyric, or any component. I mean a song where you hate everything you're hearing and then there's a part where you're liking everything you're hearing.

I was listening to the Bread song "Lost Without Your Love" the other day and thinking "God, this is dreadful proto-power ballad schmaltz at its worst," but then I was surprised by the joyful, bouncy, Beatle-esque instrumental section, and then disappointed when it returned to being a schmaltzy proto-power ballad. Ever had a similar experience with a song?

I like the middle section of Land of Confusion by Genesis but the minutes before and after are fucking dreadful.

I used to only like the "Weekend World" section of Nantucket Sleighride but the rest of the song has actually grown on me considerably over the years so doesn't really count anymore.

The atmospheric opening minute or so of Money For Nothing is really good. The rest isn't.

Well, the classic example would be "Stairway to Heaven", wouldn't it? That's the first song that comes to mind. You'll never guess which part I don't like.

Second one,"Piggies" - I only like the instrumental backing, not the vocals, and certainly not the snorting.

Mr Blue Sky by ELO. I hate the song apart from the coda at the end.

Love the intro to "Sylvia" by Focus. Unfortunately, it is then followed by the most insipid melody. The Shadows were more imaginative.

Think it's fair enough to say Googa I either like songs or I don't, part ofs don't come into it.

I think the intro and verse to A new flame by simply red are interesting, and the chorus is really boring and uninteresting - but exposure to their other songs demonstrates that boring and uninteresting is the default.

Sure, we can go by that. But I really am on the fence with Stairway. Have been for years.

The part they ripped off from Spirit?

I never knew about any Spirit swipe, but what I meant was the freak-out at the end.

Interesting. It is a good coda, to be sure.

"Valeri" by The Monkees is another good example for me. The chorus is great, but the verses are just terribly generic both in melody and lyrics. Also, the part where they sing "They call her Valerie" seems dumb to me. If that's her name, why wouldn't they call her that?

Franz Ferdinand's "Take Me Out", the song that appears to be playing at the start sounds interesting. Then it breaks down into ..... that .... *holds nose*

Killing Joke's "Song and Dance". Starts off like it's going to be an absolute classic, then dribbles into a middle-aged crisis.
Like fast-moving clouds casting shadows against a hillside, the melody-loop shuddered with a sense of the sublime, the awful unknowable majesty of the world.

And the intro to My Sweet Lord is great.
Then he starts his wretched, miserable whining

The bass line in Macca’s Silly Love Songs. The song is, to quote Neil Young “a piece of crap.”
This is not the year to think about what we don’t have.
It is the year we should be grateful for what we do have.
