I love Peter Hammill, but even I have to agree he can hardly be number one.

He's the reason some people don't enjoy Van Der Graaf - 'I like the idea of the band, but that voice puts me right off'.

As opposed to what a number one slot singer might occasion: 'I don't really care for the music or the concept of the band, but you have to admit they have an undeniably excellent and enticing singer'.

As said by nobody of Van Der Graaf Generator.

Ever.
It is what it is
Now if only we could all agree on what that was...

Entirely agree

Gabriel or Jon Anderson would have been a better choice

Jon Anderson.
David Gilmour.
Peter Gabriel.
Sonja Kristina.
Greg Lake.
Ian Anderson.
Justin Haywood.
Roger Chapman.
Richard Sinclair.
John Wetton.

No room for Lee Jackson, unfortunately.

Jon Anderson is so much 'better' a singer than all of those on this ^ list that it's not even a fair fight
Gabriel, Lake and Ian Anderson are all pretty good, and I love Gilmour's voice even if he's not that great at using it.

Lee Jackson gives the Lancashire lad a run for his money

Thanks - I enjoyed that!

I have a couple of their albums and haven't played them for years. Perhaps I should dig them out

try to find some live stuff - while I love their albums too -their live show can be more interesting because they tend to build up the show slowly and then end it with an epic closer. I get the people who don't like his vocals but that really should be a problem with us prog guys and his vocals really fit the landscape music they play.
