Hunter S. Thompson's 10 favorite albums of the 1960s
Number 1 is a big surprise, as is number 10: https://faroutmagazine.co.uk/hunter-s-t ... bsYl2f10k4

Indeed! Although I'm sure the Sandy Bull album probably sounds great on various psychotropics.

Yeah, I recall reading that decades ago. I went out and bought Memphis Underground right after.

What did you think? (It didn't do much for me, but it was a long time ago...)

Listening to it now. It's good for what it is. Which is a lot of long flute jams (in other words, Rayge's worst nightmare).
I imagine if you're really really high and have nothing else to do for 45 minutes (I mean, if you're not Rayge), it totally hits the spot. I am in neither of those conditions at the moment.

I'm not even sure I've got ANY Herbie Mann. But "Memphis Underground" must be his most famous, one of the few I could name off the bat.

I haven't played it in years. I remember it being fine though - nice flute solos, background music, etc.

I suspect he looked at his completely dull list of Dylans, Airplanes and Stones and decided to insert some jazz artists so he didn't appear so pedestrian. I mean, Roland Kirk "various albums" ?? I suppose you couldn't Google "Roland Kirk discography" in 1970 Peppering in a few obscurities to balance out your boring (but honest) taste, we've all done it.

The Sandy Bull album is good - certainly better than the Mann - but it does, uh...meander a bit. I'm not judging, but...seems pretty clear drugs are an influence on his choices.
Is there any record of him talking about any of these at length? Apparently "Battle Hymn of the Republic" from the Mann album gets a mention in "Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail," and he used it as a campaign song when running for sheriff. But I'm not finding anything online saying anything about his love for it, other than articles about the list.
