Beefheart: Strictly Personal: phasing/reverberation - yes/no...?

'Thorniest'... interesting expression.
Sure, it has its fair bit of awkward songs but those are interspersed between 'catchy tunes' like Run Paint Run Run and that Vampire song of which I've forgotten the full name, amongst 2 or 3 others. If my granddaughter allows it I'll give it a spin when I get back home.

The rest all roughly take up the same space below these two. I will always have a copy of TMR and Decals even though I rarely can bring myself to listen to them. Unconditionally Guaranteed would be near the top of the rest as I really do like that album a lot.

Is there no love for "Doc at the Radar Station"? I think it's his best attempt to produce a 'normal' album. Where Unconditionally Guaranteed' miserably failed this one did have some Commercial Potential. With Bat Chain Puller it's the only Beefheart album that still gets regular airtime home on the ranch.

I like it Erik but Ice Cream for Crow is better. They are fairly similar in style aren't they...?

I like Unconditionally Guaranteed it's miles better than Moonbeams

Certainly not C. It’s one of my Captain favourites and has got many great tracks on it. If you’re after Captain weird, it ain’t, if you’re after some great songs it is.

Admittedly, the last couple of tracks are weaker: Lazy Music and Peaches but the rest are generally top-notch.

I'm not a fan of either album, but B&M is certainly more interesting to me than UG. The musicians sound fairly fully engaged, even if the Captain doesn't. The actual Magic Band on UG sound far more like "faceless session musicians" than the so-called Tragic Band on B&M would, and Don sounds utterly catatonic much of the time.

There's definitely a feeling on both albums that Don is anxious to avoid antagonizing the greater public. There's a lot of that with Clear Spot, as well - but Clear Spot was a compromise that worked, because the music was still full of character, the lyrics were clever, thoughtful and witty, and there were actual tunes that you didn't have to be some kind of adept to recognize as actual tunes. It should have been the one to put him over. But then, the records that Little Feat was making at the time should have made them stars, too, and didn't. Them's the breaks.

Wow, I've finally found the least Beefheartish Beefheart song!

I'm sure I've heard it before, but I obviously didn't register it before. I kind of get why. It's really nondescript. And, while the Captain sings it nicely (albeit without putting much emotion into it particularly) it's just so typical, I can't reconcile it, even with 'compromised' Captain. This is so compromised that I wonder if he actually thought this was his way to have a hit. Just a shame he has no particular musical or lyrical ability in that idiom. Apparently he came to that conclusion on his own soon after.

Mind you, don't go by me - "Peaches" is probably my favorite song on it!

It's not that ubiquitous - is it?

The phasing gets a tad out of hand on "Son Of Mirror Man". Otherwise, I'm more than fine with it. Great album.
