Hey, fellow Goons, here's a thread to post your favourite non-prog related songs. In the 1980s particularly, I'd moved away from prog to a large extent and was embracing a lot of what the pop/rock world had to offer. When in 1985, I heard that Steely Dan's Walter Backer had produced the new China Crisis album, Flaunt The Imperfection, I had to spring for it. And what a gem it turned out to be: just golden music and still a firm favourite. Here's the opening track, The Highest High:

I rarely strayed to far from my 60s/70s roots but did dabble in some 80s stuff like OMD, Ultravox et alia

Both the aforementioned bands I saw live at least thrice each.

They were always excellent! Hammersmith Odeon each time I recall.

Very nice, too. The Kraftwerk influence is evident, but hey, I love Kraftwerk!

I loved Robert Wyatt's reworking of I'm A Believer, which I always asked for at the Youth Club disco...amazing vocal and lovely violin solo. Did very well on the charts, too. I also loved this follow up, which I don't think did quite such good business. Another wonderful vocal:

I think Rock Bottom, Old Rottenhat and Shleep are my favourite three albums

The verb "Wyatting" appeared in some blogs and music magazines to describe the practice of playing unusual tracks, in particular songs from Wyatt's album Dondestan, on a pub jukebox to annoy the other pub goers. Wyatt was quoted in 2006 in The Guardian as saying "I think it's really funny" and "I'm very honoured at the idea of becoming a verb." When asked if he would ever try it himself, he said: "I don't really like disconcerting people, but even when I try to be normal I disconcert anyway." However, Alfreda Benge said it made her angry "that Robert should be used as a means of clever dicks asserting their superiority in pubs ... It's so unlike Robert, because he's so appreciative of the strengths of pop music. So that, I think, is a real unfairness. The man who coined it, I should like to punch him in the nose.
