When I was ten years old and living in Tennessee in 1971, I was really into the Beatles and the Monkees. But 8-track tapes of these (rather short) albums retailed for up to $4.99 !!!

A princely sum in those days, given inflation and also my relatively scant earning power at the time, albums were restricted to birthdays and Christmas and weeks of saving.

HOWEVER, a new shopping centre sprung up a couple of miles from my house out in the boonies (I learned later that while were were living there, Dolly Parton used to pass by from Blount County to record her contributions to the Cas Walker radio show in nearby Knoxville).

'Green Acres' , the jewel in the centre's crown, was an enormous discount store. As well as full-priced stuff, they also had rack upon rack of discounted, cut-out LPs, mainly from the 60's. Lots of obscure psychedelic bands, movie soundtracks (James Bond, John Barry, Ennio Morricone), obscure solo artists (Lee Hazelwood, Ericvon Schmidt), garage rock and neo-punk (Standells, Big Star), bubblegum (1910 Fruitgum Company, the Archies).

These LPs were 22 cents each! Sometimes they were ten cents - a thin dime! Such delights! Silver Metre, Sir Lord Baltimore, Animated Music From The Troll!Jan and Dead Meet Batman, Original Soundtracks to Thunderball and Dr No, Music From The Man From Uncle! Eric von Schmidt''s Who Knocked The Brains Out Of The Sky, with liner notes by Bob Dylan:

I was building a detailed knowledge of underground rock and music that would be cool in a quarter-century, without even realising it.

BUT - that Toe Fat cover! There were dozens of copies of this album !!!I used to have nightmares about it! Where's his face???!!!!

Nope - not coming back home with me. Not even for 22 cents. Not even for a dime...

A great recollection!

Thanks for appreciating my post everybody.

I edited it for accuracy:

"(I learned later that while were were living there, Dolly Parton used to pass by from Sevierville to record her contributions to the Cas Walker radio show in nearby Knoxville)".

Dolly came from Sevierville, in Sevier County, where my mum used to teach. WE were in Blount county.

I can tell you three Uriah Heep bass players who formed the rhythm section with Lee Kerslake off the top of my head, but memory sometimes plays tricks in other matters...

Fantastic evening everybody - such joy!

To absent friends, including of course, Lee on tubs. Now holding it down once more with Gary Thain, John Wetton and Trevor Bolder.

My sister and I do a spot-on rendition of this commercial for Breeze detergent, featuring Dolly and Porter Wagoner:

We have done for fifty years.

My Mom used to cry with laughter.
