R.I.P. Toots :(

Postby toomanyhatz » 12 Sep 2020, 08:15

Seemed like it was imminent for a while.

A consistent hitmaker for almost six decades. "Pressure Drop" is one of many great tunes from the The Harder they Come soundtrack, which is the first place I (and probably most of us here) heard him. Funky Kingston was a landmark album that hit just as reggae was starting to become popular in the US.

Not seeing it confirmed anywhere, but rumored to be from COVID.

Just put out a new album a few months ago, too.

“It is with the heaviest of hearts to announce that Frederick Nathaniel “Toots” Hibbert passed away peacefully tonight, surrounded by his family at the University Hospital of the West Indies in Kingston, Jamaica.

The family and his management team would like to thank the medical teams and professionals for their care and diligence, and ask that you respect their privacy during their time of grief.

One of the greats, a true pioneer of rocksteady and reggae. Lucky to see Toots & the Maytals open for Rolling Stones. Got right up front and enjoyed them more than the corporate geezers. RIP

Sad day. He was one of my favorite reggae artists. What a voice! I only got to see him once back in the early 80s and boy did he deliver. Funky Kingston and more will be blasting from my house later today after I’ve been awake a little longer. I’m still on my morning tea.

I had seen the Facebook posts with the posts about him being stable or improving and was hoping, even though it seems 9 out of 10 times that means the end is near. Really was hoping to finally see him, since he still toured the U.S. fairly regularly. Damn.
