Kevin Rowland's "My Beauty" reissued

Postby Positive Passion » 10 Sep 2020, 20:45

Including a cover of Thunder Road left off the original lease because they didn't get permission in time.
I will probably get this.

One I never expected would get reissued.

I thought they might have tried it with a different cover as I’m sure that will have lost them sales in 1999.
Every track I’ve heard off it has been better than expected. So.......

Didn't it only sell in the hundreds back then?

According to The Guardian interview, sales weren’t nearly as bad as was made out at the time

I posted this on a thread about album covers elsewhere years ago:

One thing I recall was that in 1999 when My Beauty came out first time round, an enormous billboard of the album cover went up under the bridge on Clapham High Street near where I was living, an area not unknown to graffiti.

As soon as I saw it I started counting the hours until the graffiti and defacement came - I even noted it in my diary at the time.

I waited, but there was never any graffiti, the billboard remained undefaced for the couple of weeks before it was replaced.

I always imagined the graffiti artists and defacers scratching their heads and thinking 'what can we possibly do to this guy that he hasn't already done himself? How about a moustache - make him look like a guy? But he IS a guy???!! How about 'Your Gay!!!' - kinda obvious, tho', someone else might diss ME and write underneath 'You THINK, you ARSEHOLE?'... Hmmmm - or I could just go put a moustache and 'Your Gay!!!!' on that Geri Halliwell poster down the road by the post office...'

They were right to leave the version of Thunder Road off, I can't stand it when people covering a song change the words - ugh ! Springsteen songs have lyrics about cars Kevin , get over it !

Some people change lyrics to songs.
Get over it.

(he does, as has been observed, change the lyrics to some degree with every single song on the album)

Yeh, legend has it that it sold 500 copies and was the worst selling album on Creation but it actually sold more than 20,000

That's odd, I already had the whole album in iTunes, with Thunder Road on it - and it's been there a couple of years by the look of it.

 it might help if they weren’t so lame

Well I'm not perfect, that's understood
I'll tell you something in you I’m only seeing good

Now is the time to let that all go
'Cause I'm here, honey I'm here, so come over here
It's a town full of winners, we're getting out of here to win

KR has previous in retooling other people's songs.

As Prefab Sprout's Paddy McAloon found out when he heard
Mr My Beauty had retitled "Cars and Girls" as "Bras and Pearls"
