Prog Goons only!

Postby C » 19 Aug 2020, 13:09

Why don't we talk about Glenn Cornick's Wild Turkey virtually never...?!

Two very fine albums

I really like Gary Pickford-Hopkins' vocals

'Tweke' Lewis [Man] on guitar on both albums and Jeff Jones [Man] on the second (I think!)

Pugwash was around at the formation of the band but left before the first album as recorded.

A lovely blend of rock and folk.

One can hear Wishbone Ash in there at times.

Views?

I have both of them, C.

Fine albums indeed, no question.

But many of these bands didn't have a long lifespan, probably touring the UK a couple of times.

Fat Matress, Blodwyn Pig, to name just two others.

Yes, good examples Yves

However, Wild Turkey aren't even available through Spotify/Qobuz etc....

The first one slightly over the second. Same with Fat Matress. The first two Blodwyn Pig's are equal I find.

Second Blodwyn album ruined by that cod reggae song, "To Rassman". Embarrassing and offensive. For all the "Wild Turkey/Blodwyn Pig/ Fat Mattress, none were as good as the bands that they left

May be true (well, it is) but at least they tried to move on and make a buck for themselves.

I agree about Ron Berg's To Rassman but I don't think the album was 'ruined'. However, because of it I wouldn't put the album above the first.

The bands they left Jimi Hendrix and Jethro Tull - big shoes to follow!!

They were still all very good bands - certainly better than 80% of stuff produced over the last 40 years!

Don't actually know the Wild Turkey albums but agree on the consensus re BP and FM. I seem to remember a friend of mine at the time was considering joining WT but I might just have made that up. I do remember him saying something about joining Glenn Cornick's new band.

Just looked it up - he did, Steve Gurl keyboard player, haven't seen him for years, also played with Babe Ruth I think. He was previously in a band called Dwarf with Gary Fletcher now of Blues Band fame and Gerry Sheppard - the guy with the star guitar in the Glitter Band, who died a number of years ago.

Being a Tull freak, I picked up Battle Hymn when I was, oh, probably 14. It's one of those records that I modestly enjoy whenever I happen to hear it, but never really think to put on.

Blodwyn Pig are in more or less the same boat, except that I have played them more often and probably enjoy them more.

Amazingly, I don't think I've ever actually listened to Fat Mattress. Or Thin Pillow, as an uncharacteristically catty Jimi Hendrix dubbed them.

Nice story.

Have a listen to WT's first album above Rob - I think you'll enjoy it

I'm afraid I don't know Wild Turkey at all. Thanks to You Tube have just started listening to Battle Hymn, first impression (& I'm at least 3 minutes in) is good.

Well, Cornick and Redding were sacked, so they had no choice but to move on. Abrams and Anderson were at odds musically, and the least talented left. Dear God, imagine if it was Anderson who had left instead.

And maybe there wouldn't have been so many people who thought his name was Jethro Tull.
