Lockdown Listen: Slapp Happy: Sort of...

Postby C » 01 Aug 2020, 13:27

If you are streaming will be playing the eponymous Slapp Happy album which is combined with their next album Desperate Straights.

Image

The album was originally recorded in 1973 in Germany under a working title of Casablanca Moon with Faust as Slapp Happy's backing band, but Polydor Records in Germany rejected it. After moving to London and signing with Virgin Records, Slapp Happy re-recorded the album (at Virgin's request) with session musicians, and with new arrangements of the songs by Roger Wootton of Comus. Virgin released the album in 1974 as Slapp Happy. A second UK pressing of the album used the title Casablanca Moon on the label (though not on the cover). Later CD reissues officially used the title Casablanca Moon. In 1980 Recommended Records released the original recording (with Faust) as Acnalbasac Noom (Casablanca Moon with the words written backwards) with some slight changes

We will be playing:

1. "Casablanca Moon"
2. "Me and Parvati"
3. "Half Way There"
4. "Michelangelo"
5. "Dawn"
6. "Mr. Rainbow"
7. "The Secret"
8. "A Little Something"
9. "The Drum"
10. "Haiku"
11. "Slow Moon's Rose"

What a great band they were?

They made some great music with both Faust and Henry Cow which can't be bad

This their second album

Following on from last Friday's tribute to Petr Green: "Bye everyone - terrific evening.

See you Tuesday for a good Slapp!"

This evening, one of my favourite collectives, a decidedly curious and quirky bunch. This was only truly brought home to me when I met them (here we go again...), not in the queue at a local shop, but at my local arts cafe, where they were playing in residence one weekend:

The intro to the album just defines 'bohemian'.

Dagmar Krause had a greta voice.

One of the treasures I took away from meeting them all:

I got them all to sign my copy! It took an hour what with chatting.

Been a long time since I heard her/them - but now you mention it, I do believe you're right.

Love Blegvad's backing vocalisations.

This music always cheers me up, and takes me to another place.

And they are such lovely, complex individuals.

Mad as a large box of amphibians, I'll grant you, but lovely none the less.

If any of the Bush brothers are missing their Slapp Happy albums since the early 1970s, I suggest they should ask their younger sister Kate.

I agree on all points Chris

No wonder Polydor dropped them and didn't release this!

By the way JJ/Chris - how are you with Faust?

I love them but have mainly not added them to the list because they are somewhat esoteric

We have done a couple of the more 'agreeable' albums...

Yes/no?
