Bands with the most intact classic lineups

Postby pcqgod » 28 Jul 2020, 16:52

Let's say for bands that released at least one album by 1980 that are still recording and/or performing, setting aside one-off reunions.

Cheap Trick -- 3/4, only missing Bun E.
The Tubes - 4/5 current members played on their 1975 eponymous debut.

ZZ TOP, of course. But maybe it’s easier being 3.

Sorry I can't recall the details, but some years back someone here mentioned seeing Golden Earring. I asked how many original members were still in the band and was told that they'd had essentially the same lineup since 1970, which surprised and impressed me. I just double-checked with Wiki, and it's still true: all current members have been in the band for 50 years (though additional members have come and gone).

The five current members of Nihilist Spasm Band are founders, at it since 1965.

All of Crosby, Still, Nash & Young

Maybe the key to longevity is putting the band members' names in the title, so you feel obliged to keep living.

When was the last time they performed or recorded together, though? Last I heard, Crosby was a pariah.

U2. No-one has left, no-one has joined, and I think no-one has done a solo album. The closest was when the rhythm section did the Mission Impossible theme, I think.

OMD started gigging as a duo, and the same two are still playing under that name today, though they have been round the houses.

And of course the Stones, with 3 out of 5 from the early sixties and 4 out of 5 from the mid-70s still playing in the band.

The Edge has done some soundtrack stuff, too. And he and Bono did that Spider-Man musical.

Good call, regardless.

Same first initial, too.

Sadly he was the first to go - meeting a far from cozy
end using his phone in the car while driving too fast, iirc

The present line-up of Soft Machine have three members that played with them in the 70s - Babbington, Marshall and Etheridge - do they count?

Also it is debatable as to what was their 'classic' line-up....?

The Moody Blues, though down to one original member, still have 3/5 of the most famous lineup.
