Fleetwood Mac 1969-1974 years finally reissued

Postby Pool Hall Richard » 24 Jul 2020, 18:15

Finally, that lost period gets a reissue. I for one will be up for this. Have all of them on vinyl but if the vinyl reissue box goes cheaper later on i'll get it to go alongside the 1969-72 box from several years back.

8CD box set with bonus tracks £38 • 4LP vinyl package £90

Rhino will soon issue Fleetwood Mac 1969 to 1974 a new 8CD box set that covers a five-year timeframe and several different band line-ups of the band, from founding members Fleetwood, Green, McVie and Spencer; to later additions like Danny Kirwan, Christine McVie, Dave Walker, Bob Welch, and Bob Weston.

This CD collection includes seven remastered studio albums: Then Play On (1969), Kiln House (1970), Future Games (1971), Bare Trees (1972), Penguin (1973), Mystery To Me (1973), and Heroes Are Hard To Find (1974). Six of the seven include bonus tracks, with single versions, non-album tracks and some alternates.

The bonus eighth CD is an unreleased recording of the band’s 15 December 1974 concert at The Record Plant in Sausalito, California. The performance captures the band – Fleetwood, Welch and the McVies – on tour supporting their latest album, Heroes Are Hard To Find (the show was simulcast on the KSAN-FMl radio station in San Francisco).

Packaging-wise, this is a clam shell box with a 12-page booklet.

At the same time a vinyl box will be issued. Fleetwood Mac 1973 to 1974 is a late follow-up to the 1969-1972 vinyl box from 2013. This features Penguin (1973), Mystery To Me (1973), and Heroes Are Hard To Find (1974) and the live album from December 1974. Chris Bellman at Bernie Grundman Mastering has cut the lacquers for all the albums from the original analog masters, which are pressed on 140-gram vinyl and presented in replica sleeves made to look like the original pressings.

This vinyl set comes with a bonus seven-inch single featuring ‘For Your Love’ (Mono Promo Edit) on one side, and the previously unreleased ‘Good Things (Come To Those Who Wait)’ on the flipside. Both of those are bonus tracks on the Mystery to Me CD in the new box set.

They are released on 4 September 2020, via Rhino.

I'll be buying it for the bonus tracks and the live set, but I wish they hadn't waited 'til I'd already bought all the hi-res download versions (great sound, but no bonuses except Then Play On)...

I'm a big fan of FM past and present but to be honest the three studio LPs in the box aren't really that great, already got them on vinyl and I can't remember the last time I played any of them. The previous LP box had their best mid period work in it so don't think I'll be buying this new LP set even for the extra LP, although it does look quite attractive.

However, if the CD box comes down in price I might just be tempted - that looks quite tasty.

Great news! I’ll be happy to have these on cd. No way I’m paying for new versions on wax, I have all but a few and they’ve never been high dollar items.

Future Games is my favourite from this era but i'd rate Mystery To Me a close second.

Here's the part of the BBC Rock Family Trees episode that covers this era, in fact the Kiln House era is in the previous part but worth watching just to see interviews with both Bob's Welch and Weston, these inteviews from '97, both have since passed away. In fact i think only Dave Walker (briefly on 2 tracks on Penguin 1973,) that is still around, of course Christine, John and Mick still playing with the band.

Not that it matters but I have always thought of Then Play On as the end of the first period rather than the lost period. I’ll be getting the box anyway!

Of course. And it's the same mastering and bonus tracks that came out years ago. Silly.

Penguin and (especially) Heroes Are Hard To Find are dogs, but Kiln, Future, Trees and Mystery have been my most-played FM albums for the last... decade? More than that, I guess. Hopefully this reissue will lead to a widespread reassessment of the "in between" era (doubt it, though).

Wouldn't say they were dogs, a little harsh. Took me many a year to buy Penguin because of its reputation as their "worst" album but id say its much better than expected. Like this track a lot.

Yep, doesnt really fit, suggest the box should be 1970-1974, start with Kiln House but not going to complain having any Peter Green being included (RIP)

There are a few good tracks ("Bright Fire" is certainly a, maybe the, highlight), but they're far and away the least impressive albums of the 1967-79 run.

They're including Then Play On because it's part of the Warner Brothers era, not the Immediate one. It has nothing to do with anything arbitrary.

Got my copy Friday, really enjoying this, great sound quality, price was £40ish but now down to £31.

Extra's pretty good (to be fair only listened to Future Games and Bare Trees so far) but i'm very pleased. Apparently the version of Then Play On is exactly the same as the 2013 reissue.

Question for those who already have the CD set, are the covers replicas of the originals, gatefolds where they were gatefolds, inserts etc?

Far from being a dog “Heroes Are Hard To Find” is probably my favourite from the era along with “Future Games”. Bermuda Triangle , Angel, the title track , Come a Little Bit Closer .... all great , top notch album.

I'm pretty sure, yes. But I never owned these on LP, so if any insert is missing I wouldn't know.
