kath - Hatfield & The North [of England] comes from a road sign.

Sadly I can't get a image of the old signs but you get the drift from this

There is a leading British novelist who is obsessed with them - named an early novel after their album The Rotter's Club, and I seem to recall put wither the band or their albums in the story. Or both.

Jonathan Coe.

Yes - the main character's sister's boyfriend was a prog goon before the term existed and introduced the main character to the band, possibly even took him to see them at a gig.

The Rotter's Club is the first of a trilogy, in the last of the three Middle England the main character is, amongst other things, writing a huge novel which he wants to be read while a prog and classical music soundtrack to be played.

GG are never far away

THE most underrated band of all time

They were massively influential of what came later but sadly at the time didn't get the recognition they deserved.

they wanted to be 'out there' but it cost them. trouble is when folk started to get them they lost their bottle, where keen to break into the USA, and became a little more 'normal'

never mind - folk get them now

This is thunderous stuff

What a powerhouse Pip was

This is great! I have had this album for decades, and , as so often here, am hearing it anew.

I think it's a cello and Georgina Born - she worked with Henry Cow and Lindsay Cooper (also of the Cow)

Great lyrics (as discussed earlier)

Blam, zing, mule kicks
Real life John Wayne
Nerves twitch, legs kick
Death, pain
It's a shame to say
You're such a bore today
Though the picture is quite okay
Your expression has gone away

If you just sit on your arse
The whole world won't gasp
The little dog laughed to see such a farce
It was quite insane
Nerves twitch, legs kick
Real life, death, pain

You might as well say nothing for real
Than bore us with the things that you feel
If that's tough on you

You know that it's up to you
It's not like it's too much to do
What a pity to waste your time

Meanwhile John Wayne and Rip Torn
Are making us all yawn
Words and thoughts travel at different speeds
And make no sense to me
Nerves twitch, legs itch
Blam, zing, death, bleed
