Difficult to know for sure whether Blackmore would've heard the first vid...it's a pretty obscure record.

I have often thought the opening riff to Peacock Suit by Paul Weller was more or less the same riff as the opening of You and your friend by Dire Straits, though the Weller is much faster. Am I talking shite?

Here's one that I think Pete brought to my attention some years ago. Bobby Parker's "Watch Your Step" was used not once, but twice by the two biggest UK groups of the '60s and '70s.

The Beatles changed a few notes and came up with:

Now, before Charlie becomes apoplectic, no, it's not the same riff - but similar.
Not to be outdone, Led Zeppelin used that riff to come up with their "Toad" homage:

Just listening to The Flaming Lips ‘Fight Test’ and keep thinking of Cat Stevens ‘Father & Son‘

Think he will have heard it in a restaurant/party and the riff has earwormed into his head. Probably played guitar every day and repeated the riff during practice which eventually developed it into a song having long forgetten where he got the riff from  Different times.

With a lot of artists, you're never gonna hear them say that they took a riff/lick/lyric from another song. So I rarely take their word as gospel. For me, it's enough to know that the riff, or an approximation, existed before.
