RIP Mike Appleton of Florence Foster Jenkins Musical Emporium* fame

Postby Sam Stone » 20 May 2020, 12:04

Heart failure aged 83 on April 10 though his obit has only just appeared in the Times today.

Surprised no one here has mentioned him before.

He ultimately not only bought us all the amazing acts we ageing BCBers got see on the FFJME* every Tuesday
night during our 1970s adolescences (and, let's not forget he also produced Live Aid).

His refusal to countenance the BBC's wiping over the tapes is the reason why those performances
are still there for us to watch over and over again today.

* The original proposed and mercifully rejected name for the Old Grey Whistle Test

Good call Sam.
The twin musical thang for most of us.
OGWT on TV and Peel on the radio.

The non scrubbing of performances could be his legacy.
A kind of BBC Alan Lomax if you will :)

...........and still Jerry Lee & Keith Richards survive

This is the first I've heard of the original name - I almost wish they'd kept it!

Original name weird but probably no weirder than OGWT. Suspect we would quickly have got used to it although it is a little long
