Phil May RIP

Postby Sam Stone » 15 May 2020, 16:43

Fell off his bike and suffered head injuries not far from his Norfolk home apparently.

Great band who probably never really achieved the success they merited.

Never been my go-to band but Phil certainly was an icon.

One of the stories I read said that he's been in poor health for some time, so I guess this was just the final straw. Terribly sad.
Where would rock 'n' roll be without feedback?

Pretty Things gave their final concert in 2018, and May was there till the end. RIP Phil May

Nooo!

While I was never a huge fan of the psychedelic stuff I love the R ‘n’ B years.

RIP Phil.

Man, I love the RnB AND the psych stuff. I’m not as crazy about the Brown Sound “Parachute” as some, but they really were so great. RIP, indeed.

Damn.

I've said this before, and I'll say it again - in the 60s, they were up there with anybody. I rank them up there with the Who, Kinks, Stones - anyone you can name, really, other than the fabs.

I was hoping to meet him one day and tell him that.

He was certainly a character. Particularly liked their early singles and briefly saw them live once before hastily departing, probably liked them more for what they stood for than their music

With all of this Covid 19 going on, falling off your bicycle and dying because of it just seems completely and utterly tragic, more than anything it just shows how tenuous our grip on life is.

Condolences to his friends and family.

Trio.

Although I have come to really appreciate Get the Picture? lately. They were pretty much on fire then. Particularly wild for '65, and a lot of great singles came out around the same time that could have been on the album. As I've said on here many times, the Stones eventually passed them by, and their peak lasted longer, but at this point I'm not sure I'd put the Stones above them.

SF Sorrow is great too. In fact all their 60s albums are. It's only after Parachute things went downhill. Though there's moments thereafter, they cease to be a band I love. 80s and beyond I don't care for them much at all.

They made a critical comeback with an album in 1999, Rage Before Beauty. Saw them live around the same time, unplugged, at a small venue. I'd hoped to get the chance to see them electric, but the SF Sorrow concert did not come over here. I haven't got the full album run yet, but I will certainly get the sixties albums that I am missing.

This is my favorite CD by them, a comp of the Fontana years:
