We had the MM and NME and Sounds - they would have reported the changes.

No real fan would turn up to a gig not knowing the band's personnel - surely...?

Back in the day, when many of my peers were into Yes, ELP, Zeppelin etc I was a bit of a blues purist, also liking 60s music, more to the soul side of things as well as and starting to enjoy jazz.

I went to see Peter Hammill a year or so later. Fans were gobsmacked that his band had two members of Van Der Graaf in it and that they did VDGG tunes.

All clearly telegraphed in the music press

Agree it would have been unlikely that real fans wouldn't have known that Anderson had left, though wouldn't expect Yes fans to be reading the NME in 1980 - they'd gone fully into new wave.
