A sort of bastard twin of careers that started out well but fizzled out.
An obvious one would be Bruce S and Neil Y sideman Nils Lofgren.
Grin were one of those bands the critics used to drool over. His first three solo
studio albums and live bootleg all also seemed to get
terrific reviews in the likes of NME but never really set the charts alight.
Anyone agree/disagree or have any other candidates

Agree with you - Nils/Grin were rather lauded in the NME and must have made little impression in the charts. At the time I think I only heard Keith Don't Go which left me cold.
Other candidates? Some of the industrial bands such as Einstürzende Neubauten were rather praised but sales were low.

Cry Tough was a top ten album in the UK - not too shabby.

River Deep, Mountain High did respectably, but not the smash it was meant to be. Made Spector go into semi-retirement.

Not so much 'hailed by the critics' but 'lauded by other artists', I would nominate Ron Sexsmith.
https://www.buzzfeed.com/mikespohr/your ... songwriter
"Elvis Costello once said Sexsmith “has got one of the purest senses of melody since Paul McCartney," and Elton John personally called him to praise his 2007 album, Time Being. Even Bob Dylan handpicked a couple Sexsmith tunes to play on his Sirius radio show, Theme Time Radio Hour. And this for a musician who’s never scored a top 40 hit."
Loads of positive praise but little chart success.

I remember them being pushed by NME or Melody Maker like mad for a while. Came across their CD at a boot fair a few years ago, having never heard them and bought it for something like 10p, still don't think I've heard them. Just remembered, weren't they on Top of the Pops once - so I must have heard something by them.
Their name really didn't help did it?
Any Trouble, weren't they the critics cat's whiskers once?

Yeah
I bought the Gay Dad record and I rather liked it but it never really took flight did it?
I only heard Any Trouble for the first time last week, oddly. Was always aware of them though..
