How good was Ronnie James Dio....?

Postby C » 14 Mar 2020, 21:17

I reckon he was probably one of the greatest rock vocalists but some say I might be in a small minority that thinks so

So how good was he...?

What you reckon?

Wondered if you might make a thread out of this C.

As I mentioned elsewhere, for me he wasn't anything particularly special I'm afraid, much like the vast majority of heavy metal/rock singers.

To be honest, often when I stumble on this opinion, I find something on Youtube to try to understand it.

I'm afraid I'm useless here, because every time I do that, I realize that the style—of his voice, the music, etc.—is just so far distant from what I like and listen to that he just falls on deaf ears.

I'm up against the limits of taste here and can't discern why anybody would prefer him to nearly anybody else in that genre. Except for Ozzy Osbourne, who is simply a lousy singer. Even his admirers admit that, right?

One of the top three or four metal vocalists ever.

It's a big voice and I like the sound of it.
There's not a lot of subtlety there though and he often over-eggs the pudding.
But for those three Rainbow, three Sabbath and the first couple of Dio records, he's up there among the greats
The Complete Slade Mp3 set now available in the usual place, should you want one.

Okay, let's look at the competition

Ozzie - great for Sabbath but no range nor tone but he can belt it out

Gillan - a contender - a big voice with a big range

Coverdale - a bit screechy for my taste

Bonnet - no thank you

AC/DC's Bon or theother bloke - great voices for Malcolm'd Band but that's about it...?

Lenny - good at what he did

Then the others - the Judas Priest bloke et alia

The of course there is the great Lee Jackson....

Ozzie with the Sabs
Gillan with Purple
Bon with AC/DC, not the other guy
Bonnet with Rainbow

The rest and those above solo I couldn't care less about. I confess it's not a genre I have much time for, mainly because of the vocalists I would suggest.
